“The Disappeared, Part II” was a big improvement over the first part and proved this story could actually be a lot of fun. With even better interaction between Mace and Jar Jar, some really great action sequences, and the return of Mother Talzin this episode was a pleasant surprise. Mace wondered why the cultists were collecting the force in the containment sphere, because they wouldn’t be able to harness its power. This line actually made the idea of someone being able to steal the Force a little more tolerable to me because it showed not just anyone could steal the force and use it. Mace explained to Jar Jar he could track the sphere with the Force and use this to find Queen Julia. Meanwhile, the Frangawl cult leader arrived on Zardossa with Queen Julia and told his followers they had to transfer her living Force to the Great Mother.

When Mace and Jar Jar arrived on Zardossa, Jar Jar was ready to rush off and start searching for Queen Julia but Mace wanted to meditate and find her through the Force. Jar Jar’s impatience in this scene was amusing. I loved Jar Jar’s line, “Yep, meesa see that from here too” in response to Mace seeing people and a market in his vision. Mace and Jar Jar began to chase after the cultists who had Queen Julia and Mace managed to defeat several of them. One of the cult members released two Gundarks and snatched Mace’s Lightsaber with a whip (continuing the Indiana Jones references). As Mace fought off the Gundarks, Jar Jar actually attacked the cult member and retrieved Mace’s Lightsaber. Mace made quick work of the Gundarks after that but this was a great action scene that helped illustrate Mace’s fighting skills and Jar Jar’s resourcefulness. Mace knocked the cult member unconscious with the force and he and Jar Jar went after the Queen and her captors.

The Frangawl cultists greeted the Great Mother who was none other than Mother Talzin herself. It was great to see Mother Talzin again. It’s hard to believe but the last time we saw her was in the season four finale, “Revenge.” Mother Talzin is one of the most intriguing characters The Clone Wars has introduced and has made a great addition to the Star Wars saga. Talzin’s plan was to combine the living force from Queen Julia and the containment sphere and her dark magic to become the most powerful being in the galaxy. I’m glad this episode finally clarified that Talzin’s dark magic is something entirely different than the living Force. Mace and Jar Jar arrived but Jar Jar awoke the stone guardians outside the temple. Mace and Jar Jar BOTH took out the stone guardians. Jar Jar’s clumsiness was funny without being too slapstick. It was a very fun scene. Mother Talzin summoned a sword made of her dark magic and engaged in a Lightsaber duel with Mace Windu. The duel between the two was an amazing visual and was a sight to behold. I only wish it lasted a little longer. Jar Jar freed Queen Julia and accidently destroyed the containment sphere which set off a huge explosion. The cult was destroyed and Mother Talzin disappeared into a fog of green mist. Mace, Jar Jar, and Queen Julia rode off into the sunset a la Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. “The Disappeared, Part II” was just a lot of fun and delivered several great action and comedic scenes and brought Mother Talzin back one more time before the end of the series.

What Worked

• Mace Windu vs. Mother Talzin
• It was just fun and that’s okay
• Teaming up Jar Jar and Mace Windu made both characters more likable

What Didn’t Work

• Mother Talzin’s abrupt defeat
• Still not crazy about people being able to steal the Force, but it was handled better this time
