During the battle of Coruscant, Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi is assigned to lead a strike team to battle the droid armies stationed on Mygeeto. He appears to the Jedi Council via hologram and reports on his progress. He fights bravely until his clone troopers suddenly change and turn on him.
The Saga Collection was the first basic figure line where Hasbro really tried their best to make all of the figures part of the line unique in one way or another. There were obviously going to be repacks in one form or another, but Hasbro would add a new accessory or update a paint job to keep the line fresh and new. And for figure that they really couldn’t update at the moment, they would cast in holographic form, like the pretty awesome Holographic Ki-Adi-Mundi. Holographic Ki-Adi-Mundi is awesome because he is part of a pivotal scene in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith where he communicated updates to the Jedi Council along with 2005's ROTS [Holographic] Aayla Secura (III 67) and Holographic Clone Commander Cody (SAGA 056) and it was one rare scene in the film where the holographic images were in true 1: 1 scale. So it makes sense why they are the same size as the rest of the figures in the 3.75” scale. (Not all holographic figures that have been previously released should be in full 3.75” scale.)
Another nice thing about Holographic Ki-Adi-Mundi is his limited articulation. That might be contradictory as we love super-articulation. Super-articulation is wonderful of course, but when it comes to holographic images, less works much better than more because you get more of a seamless “holographic” effect when you’re not looking all the inner-workings of the figure. Hasbro has really perfected the look of what a holographic image should look like in our opinion. They’ve mastered the right shade of blue and have thrown in some glittery derivative into the body of the blue plastic to help it pick up some light and create a cool and believable effect. What’s not so believable is Ki-Adi-Mundi’s included holographic lightsaber. The accessory in this format is just plain silly and not necessary. But perhaps to make this figure seem a little more interesting Hasbro thought a weapon would do a lot more for the figure than without it. Granted, this figure is a novelty and not really screen accurate, but we still appreciate it.
Ki-Adi-Mundi comes with a personalized stand and if you’re not too crazy about this figure you can use it for another (or future) figure that does have all the bells and whistles you want for a definitive Ki-Adi-Mundi action figure! And whether this is irony or serendipity, Holographic Ki-Adi-Mundi also comes with his own random “good guy” miniature hologram. You certainly get enough of three-dimensional “nothingness” with this basic figure! We understand that holographic figures are innately boring. It’s really what you can make of them that will decide whether they are worthy additions to your collection or not. We think if Hasbro randomly peppers them throughout the years, they will be most welcomed. But it seems that there is a heavy focus to bust quite a few out in The Saga Collection. Hasbro may be responsible for killing this type of basic figure. Less is more in more ways than one for Holographic Ki-Adi-Mundi. If you want him, get him, because he will absolutely never be re-released again.
Status: Holographic Ki-Adi-Mundi is a rework of 1999's EI Ki-Adi-Mundi figure. This time it has been cast in translucent blue plastic to recreate the effect of a hologram image.
