Guess what, everyone? Hasbro designed new tooling to produce the excellent Rebel Commando. So, to do that, they will make you pay an arm and a leg for it. So let the barking and clapping seals commence their approval of ridiculously-priced action figures. Because you know they will. Have we reached a point in collecting where plastic action figures are running alongside the prices of what the Star Wars Sideshow Collectible 12-Inch Figure line offered at its inception? Just a little over $10 separates the two, which is as egregious as depressing. Yes, many years separate the two, and prices have gone up, but this is ridiculous now. But you may be able to overlook the laughable MSRP. Hasbro designed a beautiful action figure here, which is a highlight of 2023 so far. Hasbro similarly approached the Rebel Commando to what they did with 2020's TBS [TESB40] Rebel Soldier (Hoth) figure. They designed many accessories to accompany the figure, but the most significant selling point is the alternate portrait. We have to ask them. How could the Rebel Soldier (Hoth) figure, being all-new and an alternate portrait faceplate, cost $19.99, but the Rebel Commando is $33.99? Something is rotten in Denmark.
Collectors of The Vintage Collection line are going to be mad. We've been waiting YEARS for Hasbro to give us a modern update to the 1983 ROTJ Rebel Commando Kenner figure. Don't misunderstand, please. Hasbro has given collectors some good to excellent 3.75-inch soldiers from Endor. Still, we need Hasbro to come closer to providing us with a super-articulated character based on the outfit of the 1983 classic. Now, The Black Series collectors get it with Hasbro's first try in 6-inch scale, and TVC collectors are STILL waiting for the proper update. Hopefully, Hasbro will do right by the 3.75-inch super-articulated collecting community, reduce this figure, and add it to The Vintage Collection lineup. The Rebel Commando is nearly perfect. Hasbro still misses the mark with the 6-inch line's frequent lanky legs and much-too-narrow lower body section (at some angles), but this is an impressive release beyond those issues. From the front view, the Rebel Commando captures the spirit, masculinity, ruggedness, and overall spirit of freedom these characters possessed in the Battle of Endor. And this is a picture-perfect character to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Return Of The Jedi. You will likely want many variations of this figure in your collection.
We appreciate that Hasbro included an alternate portrait of the popular Nik Sant character. We're still determining if it's a perfect likeness of that on-screen character, but it's more than passable. The more generic/standard portrait looks excellent as well. The Vintage Collection was fortunate to receive a black likeness; we hope that The Black Series line also offers that, as multiple black characters were represented in Return Of The Jedi. The vest, belt, and bandolier are all removable here. We would have loved to see a removable helmet. Hasbro didn't need to approach the accessories this way, but we appreciate the options here. Hasbro included a blaster rifle (without a strap) and a standard blaster from the Rebel Alliance. The figure interacts with both of them beautifully. And the soft pack backpack was a pleasant surprise here, as that is a distinction between the Kenner figure and many of the Endor soldiers Hasbro produced with a hard pack backpack throughout the years. The deco on the figure is generally excellent, but Hasbro left the knee joints gray, and it's very distracting. It would have been better if they molded the legs green to hide this mismatch. Aside from the ludicrous price, the Rebel Commando will be a highly sought-after action figure.
