Stormtroopers are elite shock troops fanatically loyal to the Empire and impossible to sway from the Imperial cause. They wear imposing white armor, which offers a wide range of survival equipment.
Meh, 2006’s The Saga Collection George Lucas (In Stormtrooper Disguise) is better. For reasons unknown, Hasbro decided to revise the “George Lucas (In Stormtrooper Disguise)” novelty for The Black Series [Lucasfilm 50th] line that celebrates, well, the 50th Anniversary of Lucasfilm, LTD. The 6-inch George Lucas (In Stormtrooper Disguise) is an excellent figure, and it beats the 3.75-inch effort with tooling and articulation. Still, there is no way anyone can deny the charm that the original brought to the basic figure line by filling collectors with joy when Star Wars was a whole lot less contentious. Hasbro did its best to recreate the magic on the mail-away exclusives from 2006. They copied most of the details verbatim, but there is no comparing the 6-inch card style to the 3.75-inch card style when Hasbro attempts to replicate the original Kenner themes. The reflective ribbon on the “racing stripes” looks muted on the 6-inch card, but other parts, like the nameplate, look refreshed and updated. But despite the large card, the 3.75-inch card shows more of the footprint or landscape of the character photo, and details like the clouded red smoke behind the Stormtroopers stand out tremendously more.
Like the 3.75-inch counterpart, George Lucas (In Stormtrooper Disguise) comes with two accessories, a removable Stormtrooper helmet and an E-11 blaster. But for the 6-inch release, Hasbro decided to tool a more updated (i.e., older) version of George Lucas. From the light gray hair to the wary expression, Hasbro wished to update the likeness to be a little more contemporary. Still, the 2006 version was based on George’s likeness from the 70s, so we believe Hasbro lost the plot when designing this figure and should have kept a youthful portrait for the 6-inch version. It’s not that big of a deal or detail, just a personal preference. As you may or may not know, George Lucas (In Stormtrooper Disguise) is based on 2020’s TBS [P4] Imperial Stormtrooper (TM02) figure. The figure comes with an incredible amount of detail and has a wonderful sculpt that is proportionate and functional as any previous Stormtrooper action figure to date. The white armor is shiny, the articulation points move smoothly, and the obtainable poses feel limitless. Collectors will buy George Lucas (In Stormtrooper Disguise) for its novelty, but it does offer an incredible range of movement.
Hasbro worked in an incredible 30 points of articulation into this tooling. The portrait is double-jointed. It comes with a ball-socket head, but it also has a reversed ball-socket neck. The fluidity of the movement is fantastic, and you can tilt the head at every angle possible, thanks to this ingenious design. The design of the removable helmet is equally impressive. Although not new for George Lucas (In Stormtrooper Disguise), the wonderfully installed “butterfly” joints give entire lateral movement in the shoulders. Hasbro combined this enhancement with updated ball-jointed shoulder joints, and the range of motion the figure achieves from these points is astounding. The enhanced ball-jointed articulation in the shoulders is also a significant update here. The angles you can achieve in the elbows are unreal. Hasbro hasn’t ever had the success they do here with elbows. George Lucas (In Stormtrooper Disguise) doesn’t come with many accessories, but that’s not the point of this figure. It’s a celebratory or commemorative type of action figure. And many collectors likely won’t remove the figure from the packaging. Also, Hasbro finally got the white armor a pure white color. We don’t see any signs of white discoloring.
