An assassin and elite mercenary who has worked for all the top syndicates. Clever, capable, and cunning, she is a formidable opponent.
Making her debut in The Mandalorian, the character of Fennec Shand soon made its way to The Bad Batch and The Book Of Boba Fett, as well as other Star Wars multimedia events, and she is growing in popularity. Played by the beautiful Ming-Na Wen, Star Wars fans taken by The Mandalorian Disney+ series eagerly await all forms of Fennec Shand action figures to take up some space in their collections. And Hasbro is making that a reality thanks to the character’s inclusion in The Black Series [Phase IV] lineup. Part of the sixth wave of figures (in the fourth phase of the line’s packaging style), the officially unannounced wave includes greats like Bib Fortuna and repacks of convention exclusives including Ponda Baba, Doctor Evazan, and Princess Leia Organa (Yavin 4). Fennec Shand is one of the few all-new figures in this wave, and Hasbro developed a faithful recreation of the on-screen character seen in The Book Of Boba Fett. Despite making a first appearance in The Mandalorian, Hasbro decided to package the figure as the first in The Book Of Boba Fett series. With forest-green coloring accenting the primarily black, white, and gray packaging, Fennec Shand is a welcome addition to The Black Series 6-inch line. Many are looking forward to who else Hasbro will add from The Book Of Boba Fett, and The Mandalorian Disney+ shows in toy format.
As mentioned, Fennec Shand is an all-new figure. Quite frankly, we’re astounded with how much detail Hasbro worked into this action figure. Firstly, the portrait is a faithful replica of actress Ming-Na Wen. When you look at the action figure’s face, you quickly recognize it as the actress. The figure has a long ponytail that falls down the right side of the face. And Hasbro was also sure to work in the orange netting the character wears in the hair. Hasbro also captured the faint scar on the actress’ left cheek. The Photo Real applications look neat and clean, and in alignment. The black outfit is exceptionally detailed. The pattern etched into the black outfit is reminiscent of abstract artwork that focuses on concentric circles and radial rings, which create textured designs that are nothing more than illusions (but on this action figure are real textured rings). You get the same (or similar) vibe by analyzing this figure’s clothing). What’s more, Hasbro added color detail for screen accuracy, making the elements stand out more. This texture cannot be seen from a short distance, and it’s only with up-close analysis that they become visible. Fennec Shand has an athletic frame. And while we believe the action figure may be too tall for the short-statured Ming-Na Wen, the action figure is notably shorter than Boba Fett, so perhaps that’s all that matters here.
Fennec Shand comes moderately accessorized, but Hasbro hasn’t figured out how to cost out a wealth of accessories for the 6-inch line without upgrading the MSRP to Deluxe status. That’s unfortunate for everyone because the 6-inch line cannot world-build. The line is reliant on how the figures interact with the included accessories. With Fennec Shand, we get a blaster rifle with a removable strap. The strap doesn’t easily stay on the gun, unfortunately. The strap has two tiny plugs that fit into holes on the blaster rifle, but they fall out very easily, much to the frustration of collectors attempting to pose their action figures. Lastly, Hasbro added Fennec Shand’s signature helmet. They did an excellent job articulating its “jaw” so that it opens up, allowing you to see the action figure’s eyes underneath it. The helmet is two pieces, but they’re bound tightly together. However, you can create a little “airspace” to allow the figure’s peepers visibility. The articulation system of Fennec Shand is excellent. The figure is very movable, and you’re able to pose it in a variety of ways, including kneeling. Everything about Fennec Shand feels in place, and we’re content with the number of accessories as well. Hasbro will continue to dedicate their time and focus on the latest Disney Star Wars Entertainment, so we anticipate many other characters soon.
