Greedo - TBS [L50] - Six Inch Figures

Commemorate the first 50 years of Lucasfilm with figures inspired by the original Star Wars trilogy!

Oh boy. This one is going to be challenging to get through. When Hasbro released 2013’s The Black Series [Phase I] Greedo (#07) figure, everyone complained. What did they do to the poor Rodian’s eyes? Why are the figure’s legs so lanky and disproportionate to the rest of the body? Are those shoes accurate? Why can’t the figure hold anything in its left hand? Well, Hasbro changed nothing but the figure’s paint job, and some won’t like that either. In an odd move, Hasbro gave 6-inch collectors what 3.75-inch collectors always wanted: modern action figure with classic, albeit inaccurate, Kenner colors. Hasbro decided that these particular action figures would make the most sense in the Lucasfilm 50th Anniversary sub-line. We’re not sure we understand their logic here. Still, the Kenner-inspired figures are indeed commemorative, and perhaps that’s part of the goal with aligning action figures in this celebratory manner. First, there was Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi and Jawa, which shipped side by side. And two months later, Hasbro released Greedo. It’s an interesting take on the 1979 SW Greedo figure, and we must give Hasbro some credit here. They mimicked the nameplate perfectly because it doesn’t have a black border around it.

It’s an odd thing to say, but Hasbro didn’t recreate the aesthetics of the vintage Kenner figure accurately, even though the Kenner aesthetics were inaccurate to the on-screen character. There are clear delineations to where the aqua and green colors reside on the 1979 SW Greedo Kenner figure. But for The Black Series 6” release, they are swirled and blended into the figure, and it creates a tie-dyed effect on the figure. It’s a bit bothersome. The effort seems to have been attempted with integrity, and the execution fails a bit. What’s more, Greedo needs some retooling to recreate the Kenner version accurately. The 3.75-inch figure has green boots. But the 6-inch version has shoes. From the knees down, Greedo is inaccurate to the 1979 release. The last inaccuracy is unavoidable. The original Greedo doesn’t have any belts, but the 6-inch version has two: a removable belt/holster combination piece and then the other sculpted and painted onto the figure. This detail isn’t a big deal, but it’s worth noting that it created inaccuracy. Still, for us, the biggest issue is the head sculpt with the elliptical eyes. It’s the biggest detractor on the figure.

Greedo is accurately proportioned to the on-screen character. It has an athletic frame and can pass for either the male or female actors who played him in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The figure comes with a wonderful 28 points of articulation. This figure’s articulation system gives Greedo a whirlwind of movement and allows you to interact with it in ways you never could in the 3.75-inch line. You can pose the figure in any configuration you desire. For accessories, Hasbro gave Greedo a removable belt/holster combination piece and a blaster pistol. As you know, the head sculpt is excellent, save for the eyes. The shape and profile of it are perfect. So we’re not sure what went south with the eyes. A figure’s portrait is the most critical factor of what makes an action figure lifelike and screen-accurate. Perhaps the figure’s inaccuracies are easily overlooked since this is another “novelty” action figure for the 6-inch lineup. We wonder if there are plans to produce any other “Kenner-inspired” figures with original and inaccurate deco. But whatever they decide, we are certainly building up a collection of them!
