For years, the Hasbro Fans’ Choice Poll reeked of ballot stuffing. And the polls smelled like something rotten in Denmark. Remember when Doctor Aphra appeared out of nowhere for The Vintage Collection poll? And although many didn’t know at the time, Luke Skywalker (Dagobah was well into production before the character suddenly appeared as a candidate for The Black Series 6” poll. (And who knows if the votes were accurate or if Hasbro leaned in on the figure to ensure it won. The truth is out there, but we’ll probably never know what transpired. That said, the Luke Skywalker (Dagobah) figure is part of the third wave of The Black Series [The Empire Strikes Back 40] lineup. It’s a straight repack of the figure from 2020’s TBS [P3] Luke Skywalker & Yoda (Jedi Training) (D4) Deluxe 6” figure set, but this time comes without the interchangeable hand attachments, or the bonus Yoda figure and Yoda’s accessories. Another character that wasn’t offered during the classic Kenner lineup, Luke Skywalker (Dagobah), is a fair yet perplexing addition to the 40th Anniversary line because Hasbro told us that figures in this line would be selected from the original Kenner figures. Always in motion is Hasbro’s future with the Star Wars action figure lines.
Luke Skywalker (Dagobah) is stunning. It is also a figure that you will appreciate with the human eye better than any high-resolution image taken of it on a Star Wars fansite. The Photo Real begins to look too much like [feminine] makeup, and that’s not how the human eyeball registers it in-hand. Hasbro did a brilliant job of working in articulation into the areas of bare skin. The same can’t be said for The Vintage Collection Cave Of Evil version. Luke Skywalker (Jedi Training) is only wearing a tank top, so Hasbro needed to be concerned with how they implemented the articulation throughout the figure. While we won’t claim the joints are hidden, Hasbro did a remarkable job preserving the aesthetics of the character while maintaining an articulation system loaded with movement. You’re able to pose the figure’s arms with hands holding the blue backpack’s straps, which we’re thankful to see implemented here. And thanks to interchangeable parts, you can make the figure do a handstand if desired. Although Luke Skywalker (Jedi Training) isn’t filthy, you will find a smear of dirt on his front and sweat on his back to recreate the character’s physical appearance Dagobah. This version of Luke Skywalker (Dagobah) is an excellent complement to the earlier-released Luke Skywalker (Bespin) figure.
Luke Skywalker (Dagobah) comes with a DL-44 blaster pistol, a lightsaber hilt, and a lightsaber blade. The hands and Yoda figure from the Deluxe set are absent here. All of the included accessories interact beautifully with the figure. No matter how you decide to pose Luke Skywalker (Dagobah), the articulation system doesn’t inhibit any movement. Coincidentally, the seams of the articulation don’t affect the realism of the figure. If we had one complaint about Luke, it’s that the figure doesn’t come with an “upside-down” portrait, which is essential for handstands. Other than that, we think this figure is a lovely way to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back! We hope that Hasbro can translate this figure’s approach into a 3.75”-scaled version for The Vintage Collection. Hasbro hasn’t treated this iteration of Luke Skywalker well in the original scale. So, it’s about time we finally get one. The Black Series [The Empire Strikes Back 40] line is a commemorative way to celebrate 40 years of The Empire Strikes Back. While Hasbro decided to add characters not part of the original Kenner lineup, they did compile an incredibly diverse cast of characters to represent the most exciting moments of the film in action figure form. Luke Skywalker (Dagobah) isn’t perfect, but it’s darn close.
