Oh boy. Hasbro “phoned it in” for the 2008 Disney Parks Star Wars Weekends exclusive. All previous releases up to this point included a generous amount of newness in them. This one, unfortunately, does not. A hodgepodge of previously released STAR TOURS droids from the Power Of The Jedi line, and then a set of R2-D2 and C-3PO action figures from The Saga Collection-era, the STAR TOURS Droid Pack feels like a wasted slot in the STAR TOURS line. It doesn’t possess too many reasons for collectors to purchase it. It would have been helpful if Hasbro repainted the droids to give them new appearances, whether with more dirt and grime or with a shiny fresh coat of paint. From a certain point of view, all five droids have differing paint operations than their original releases. And none of the figures come with any accessories, but that’s a standard approach for astromech and protocol droid action figures. Let’s take a closer look at the individual figures than make up this exclusive multipack.
R2-D2 is based on R2-D2 (Artoo-Detoo) from The Saga Collection’s Early Bird Figures set. The paint job is ever-so-slightly different from the original 2005 version, but it’s mostly similar, and you might not care about the differences. The figure does have a yellow hue to it, but that could be temperature-related more than anything else. As you know, this version of R2-D2 comes with the panel glued down to the action figure. But the original base figure is 2004’s VOTC Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) (With Extension Arm) figure. C-3PO is a lighter repaint of 2006’s TSC C-3PO (With Ewok Throne) (SAGA 042) figure. Hasbro utilized the updated/running change version with correct knee joints, where the left one is gold, and the right one is silver. This particular release of C-3PO is a collector favorite, and its aging gracefully in the few short years since its original release. Both R2-D2 and C-3PO interact nicely between each other and the three other droids in this multipack.
The three remaining droids were all released individually in the 2002 Power Of The Jedi line as WEG-1618, RX-24 “REX,” and DL-X2. Because Hasbro produced them for the second time, six years after the original 2002 versions, there are differences in the deco. This phenomenon is uncontrollable and an expected result when figures are produced that many years apart. RX-24 “REX,” also known as Captain REX, is voiced by Paul Reubens, and a main character in the STAR TOURS attraction. The other two figures in this set, WEG-1618, and DL-X2 are background characters in the attraction. We believe most people would overlook them walking through STAR TOURS as they’re not prominently featured, nor standout with machine-like structures and features. Overall, the set has value with an MSRP of $24.99. That’s about $5.00 per figure in an era where they average closer to $8.00 per figure. Still, if you already have these figures, there’s likely no reason to purchase this set for repeats.
