In 1997, Kenner/Hasbro worked with Parker Brothers to reimagine the classic Kenner “Escape From Death Star Game” for the modern line that would ultimately be released in the summer of 1998. With redesigned packaging to fit in with the line look of the day instead of the vintage silver and black packaging, the new box art featured the green lightsaber blade along with a collage of characters from Star Wars behind a gold Star Wars logo. Parker Brothers updated other elements of the game to look and feel a little more modern then the version released in the 70s. The packaging boasts that there are two games in one here. A simple game , and then a more complicated game are interwoven to provide entertainment to Star Wars fans of all ages. What makes this release especially modern is the inclusion of two Kenner/Hasbro The Power Of The Force “2” figures. Escape From The Death Star Action Figure Game offers collectors both Luke Skywalker (In Trash Compactor) and Darth Vader (With Removable Dome).
Luke Skywalker (in Trash Compactor) is based on 1996’s POTF2 [R/G] Luke Skywalker (In Stormtrooper Disguise) figure which was a hugely popular action figure the lats couple of years. This time, Kenner/Hasbro tooled an all-new head sculpt for Luke Skywalker so that it looks like the dianoga dunked him a few times. The action figure comes with a “wet” hairstyle, and it looks pretty good. It’s an excellent likeness of Luke Skywalker. The action figure also comes with “splatter” on its chest to recreate the sludge and garbage from getting wet in a trash compactor. All that they added were a few “hash” marks in black. The deco isn’t noteworthy, but at least they did something special to make this version appear unique to the standard releases, aside from the new head sculpt. Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader are packed with an arsenal of accessories, but most work best with Luke Skywalker (In Trash Compactor), including blue and green lightsabers and all of the blasters and blaster rifles.
Darth Vader (With Removable Dome) is the “big” surprise here. It’s an all-new figure. Most importantly, the action figure comes with eight points of articulation, the most of any Darth Vader action figure through the end of 1997. The body is more streamlined, and the design of Darth Vader looks pretty darn good. Sadly, the action figure has a few issues. It’s too short for Darth Vader. And the legs are positioned so terribly, that the action figure cannot stand unassisted unless you pull one leg forward as a “kick stand” to prevent it from toppling to the ground. The cape is removable, as is the dome. And although Kenner/Hasbro want you to believe that this is a Darth Vader action figure based on Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (as evidenced by the packaging), this is Darth Vader based on Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. The figure also comes with a red lit lightsaber (in the baggy of weapons) to complete it. For $24.99 you get a boardgame and two action figures. You could do a lot worse.
