Obi-Wan Kenobi is a legendary Jedi Master, gifted in the ways of the Force, who trained Anakin Skywalker and guided Luke Skywalker.
For the love of everything holy, please Hasbro, put this version of Obi-Wan Kenobi out of its misery. It’s the worst Obi-Wan Kenobi action figure ever produced (based on his appearance from Revenge Of The Sith). And Hasbro keeps releasing it year after year and it looks worse and worse with each successive release. It was terrible when first released in 2013. It looks worse in 2019 in the Galaxy Of Adventures line. Obi-Wan Kenobi (The Mentor) is the next release in the line to support the YouTube Disney shorts. Obi-Wan Kenobi (The Mentor) has aged terribly. It’s tired. It’s terribly painted, and the sculpting is pointless. At this point in the game, there are nothing but negatives. And as adult collectors ourselves, we’re not sure if we can draw a fair line as to what is acceptable for kids any more. Hasbro believes kids do not care about articulation. We have to disagree with those sentiments almost completely. But cost is on the rise and Hasbro needed to find ways to contain it, otherwise the future of the Star Wars brand would become a big question.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (The Mentor) no longer brings to the line what it did originally in 2013. Back in 2013, it brought forth a decent likeness and screen-accuracy, but now it looks no better than a happy meal toy. Between the horrid paint operations and the awful sculpt, we’ve reached the conclusion that this version of Obi-Wan Kenobi should never see re-release again. His hands still struggle to hold onto the lightsaber, thanks to the terrible sleeve design. And the paint operations appear to get worse every time they release it. It’s evident Hasbro has completely amortize the tooling budget for this figure. But the damage they’ve done to the collector base by incessantly repackaging it may have caused permanent damage. We’ll never understand why Hasbro didn’t tool all-new sculpts for the figures in the Galaxy Of Adventures line, but they still could have chosen better sculpts to help populate the line. Whatever. We’re honestly tired of complaining about it. But don’t be surprised to see this figure rot on shelves for a very long time.
So what does Obi-Wan Kenobi bring to the table that we really haven’t seen before? Absolutely nothing. Obi-Wan Kenobi (The Mentor) the simplest Episode III version of Obi-Wan Kenobi Hasbro has ever created. This also means they had a lot of other options to add to the Galaxy Of Adventures line. There are countless releases of Obi-Wan Kenobi that possess simple, yet good, likeness and minimal articulation. The figures from 2005’s Revenge Of The Sith line didn’t receive such pitiful articulation. And as a Star Wars action figure, it should meet expectations. This figure does not. Sure, Obi-Wan Kenobi (The Mentor) sits, stands (with balance issues), and can barely hold a lightsaber. So, what’s the point? With a swivel head, swivel shoulders and swivel hips, that’s all the movement you’re going to get out of this action figure. The bonus here is the inclusion of the miniature comic book, but we don’t believe that can save Obi-Wan Kenobi (The Mentor) from the shelves. This figure is no longer being taken seriously by Star Wars collectors. It’s another painful release.
Status: Obi-Wan Kenobi (The Mentor) is a repaint of 2013's SW [DV/ROTS] Obi-Wan Kenobi (SL04) figure. It's a terrible figure that should finally be put out of its misery.
