Battle On Mygeeto - TAC - Battle Packs

As a stronghold of the InterGalactic Banking Clan, the crystalline world of Mygeeto is caught in the maelstrom of the Clone Wars. It is where much of the Separatist movement’s wealth is kept, and so it is targeted by the Republic: gain control of Mygeeto, and the Separatists lose crucial funding. Ki-Adi-Mundi is stationed on the icy planet with the mission of wresting it from the Separatists. Together with Clone Commander Bacara, Ki-Adi-Mundi and the Galactic Marines battle the droid army in fierce urban fighting, pushing forward against a grim onslaught of super battle droids and enormous tri-droids.

Sometimes Hasbro releases a Battle Packs set that exceeds expectations. As the 30 (77-07) line was phasing out in 2008, Hasbro decided to save the best for last and throw in one last Battle Packs set into the mix. The instantly coveted and very popular Battle On Mygeeto was this final set. And it is one of the best Battle Packs we have ever received (thanks to one very special figure in the set – yes, one figure has this impact on us). Sadly, it wasn't the easiest to locate. It was the sole release in the final wave of Battle Packs for the line and it gave collectors a lot of good reasons to be happy. You all know how the fate of last waves work in the Star Wars line and Battle Of Mygeeto was no different. With just a few exceptions, the pack was pretty much based on a scene in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith and it recreated the scene in the film where Ki-Adi-Mundi fought alongside Commander Bacara and his battalion to defeat the Separatists attacking Mygeeto. Unbeknownst to him, he would be betrayed and murdered by his clone commander. To be technical, we didn’t really see the Super Battle Droid or Tri-Droid in the film, so this Battle Packs set can be considered to be sourced from somewhere in the Expanded Universe during Order 66. We don’t want to be too technical here so we are considering this set to be based on Episode III. Who knows, that scene was sensory overload and the possibility exists that there were a few Super Battle Droids or Tri-Droids in the scene way in the background that we missed that have the same coloring as the ones included here. This Battle Packs set did not see widespread distribution and was quite a burden to locate at most retail locations. It unfortunately fetches a crazy premium on eBay (one that we recommend not paying), but we absolutely encourage you to find a way to get this set into your collections. It would be a priceless addition to your collections.

The absolute reason to purchase this set is for Clone Commander Bacara. Hasbro simply gave us a gift here. Instead of resorting to the terrible 2005 ROTS Commander Bacara (III 49) figure, Hasbro dusted off the 2003 CW Clone Trooper (’03 #50) and put the head, kama and bandolier of the 2005 ROTS Commander Bacara figure on it and kit-bashed one beautiful action figure here. But the icing on the cake is the figure’s beautiful paint job. We bet that Commander Bacara will never be bettered ever again (unless they build a new one from the ground up) because this figure is everything you could want and more. (Editor’s Note: We were right. Although the 2009 LC Commander Bacara (BD47) figure utilizes the same mold, Hasbro ignored the original figure’s beautiful paint job. It just doesn’t come close.) So right now, the Battle On Mygeeto Battle Packs set is the only place to get this perfect version of the Clone Commander Bacara action figure. Ki-Adi-Mundi and the Galactic Marine have not been retooled, but have instead received newer paint jobs. The Galactic Marine definitely does not look better than the 2007 TAC Galactic Marine (No. 02) action figure because some of the coloring is either inferior in quality or just completely inaccurate. And Ki-Adi-Mundi has some improved parts (like the dirt on his skirt), but he has lost the better paint job in the face from the 2005 ROTS Ki-Adi-Mundi (III 29) figure. This may not be a big noticeable difference for you, but it is something that mildly disappoints us. The Super Battle Droid in this set looks very different from the ones we saw in Episode III. In fact, they look a lot like a Cortosis Battle Droid based on the chest decoration and black color of the droid. (Editor's Note: This super battle droid can be found in the 2009 LC Anakin Skywalker/Cortosis Battle Droid Droid Factory set.) You may be interested to know that this droid is a simple retool of the 2007 TAC Super Battle Droid (No. 08) figure because the holes in the chest (used to attach the flames) have been filled in so the droid has a smooth contour there now. This same retooled version was used on the last few batches of the 2008 TAC STAP Attack Battle Packs set as well. The Tri-Droid is a repaint of the 2008 TAC Tri-Droid (08 05) figure and we must admit that we like this Battle Packs version much better. The paint job stands out a bit more and the applications of the deco are more pronounced and tighter.

All of the figures in the set come well outfitted with weaponry and when posed together, well, magic happens. Never have we seen figures from a Battle Packs set interact so well together. For some reason, Battle Packs directly based on a scene from a Star Wars film have a much stronger impact on the collector than a set that just contains a group of figures that look good together. This makes obvious sense of course, but there is something really special about this set. All of the figures in the set have great articulation too. Hasbro has stepped up their technology and now we are getting so many action figures with premium articulation and they also have excellent likenesses. While we are not fans of swivel elbow joints (especially on Ki-Adi-Mundi), the figures are full of ball-joints which allows for unlimited planes of positioning. This is some serious articulation for collectors! We could talk about the Clone Commander Bacara figure all day so we will start wrapping up this review. But it is absolutely one of the best action figures and it is quite a shame he has been relegated to a Battle Packs set and not as a basic figure. (Editor’s Note: Again, the 2009 LC figure doesn’t hold a candle to this version of Bacara.) And even though Bacara is slightly inhibited by his kama, we don’t care because there are too many good things about him to start complaining about trivial things. If you can find this set for a reasonable price, we suggest not hesitating at all and purchase it. It was a great way for Hasbro to end the 30 (77-07) assortment of Battle Packs and we are completely taken aback that Hasbro has not resissued it since. (Why does Hasbro rerelease things we don’t want, but never stuff we do want?) Anyway, this set should be the model for what Battle Packs should contain. It is one of our all-time favorites and we hope others of this caliber are on the way to us too.
