For nearly twenty years, Obi-Wan Kenobi has hidden the presence of young Luke Skywalker from Darth Vader on the desert world of Tatooine. With his uncle and aunt murdered by Imperial stormtroopers, nothing is left to keep Luke from leaving with Obi-Wan to learn the ways of the Force, like his father before him. When the Millennium Falcon is captured by the Death Star however, Luke suddenly finds himself at the heart of the tension between the light side and dark side of the Force – a tension that will only break with the final destruction of the Sith and his advancement to the rank of Jedi Knight.

After The Original Trilogy Collection and Revenge Of The Sith lines, Hasbro knew they had to get back to an all-encompassing line look that would carry forward some of their greatest hits while introducing all-new action figures. They borrowed heavily from The Original Trilogy Collection line while adding in the smooth contours of the Revenge Of The Sith line to create The Saga Collection. The Saga Collection was unequivocally Episode III focused, but Hasbro knew how to balance new Star Wars with the Original Trilogy and created one of the greatest collector-engaging lines of all time. Although launched in December of 2005, the line was issued to help prepare for a very monumental released of the Star Wars Original Trilogy on DVD. For the first time, the films would appear in their original and unedited versions. So, in a way, The Saga Collection was a commemorative line within itself. Later fans would come to realize that the “unaltered” Original Trilogy was the remastered 1993 laserdisc versions, but at least all of the Special Edition changes were omitted. As usual, Walmart stepped up to the plate to take on the Commemorative DVD Collection multipacks as the retailer’s exclusives. And aside from great prices, the sets offered little to no value for collectors. at least they reissued some different figures this time around.

Luke Skywalker is a slightly repainted, renamed and repackaged version of the figure from the Star Wars “Saga” line (which is just a revisited version of The Power Of The Force "2" [CommTech/FlashBack] line). Sadly, it keeps getting reused across multiple line looks when the mold should be retired altogether. It is no longer holding up nicely, albeit imperfectly. In all honesty, it can become cumbersome to keep on getting Luke Skywalker action figures over and over again especially when there is no rhyme or reason for the choices Hasbro makes. Luke Skywalker comes with swivel elbows and hinge-jointed knees and gives the figure a little bit of movement, but you’re probably going to be disappointed overall because these points of articulation cannot provide a full range of movement that collectors desire. The most interesting additions to the Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader And Obi-Wan Kenobi (3 Generations Of Jedi) Commemorative DVD Collection multipack are Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Originally available in the Power Of The Jedi line to celebrate the silver anniversary of Star Wars, these statuesque versions of the main characters were tooled nicely, but come without any useful articulation. The figures are intended for display only. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader together capture the moments before the shocking death of Obi-Wan Kenobi. And this was one of the most important scenes in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

Now we have good versus evil battling in the first truly final duel of the Star Wars saga. Once again, the figures do look like revived The Power Of The Force “2” figures, but they aren’t superheroes with bulky frames like most of the figures from that era. But you’ll see how much they resemble their ancestors from the POTF2 era, especially Obi-Wan Kenobi. The figures are very simply articulated and are encumbered by their molded outer robes. But these are meant to diorama pieces, and they succeed very well at doing just that: standing around doing nothing but what the pose they’re already in is doing. Each figure comes with its respective lightsaber. The figures look great wielding them also. Obi-Wan Kenobi comes with his hood up. As you know, we haven’t received too many version of him with his cloak in this position. As expected, the hood inhibits the movement of the already limited action figure. It’s also removable (because it is a shell) and Obi-Wan Kenobi doesn’t look too good without it because he will have brown arms with the rest of his outfit being tan. The figure comes with six points of articulation. Darth Vader may be the star of the set, however. It’s not often that Hasbro screws up Darth Vader’s screen accuracy, so we should all expect this version to rise to the occasion as well. Darth Vader also comes with six points of articulation, and his accessories include a removable cape and lightsaber. This multipack is average, but you probably have all of these figures already.
