Snaggletooth

General Analysis

What the what? Is Snaggletooth the first Expanded Universe figure in the (gasp!) vintage Kenner Star Wars line? If you judge Snaggletooth by his reference image on the card back, yes, that is the character from THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL. Telltale signs like his belt, groovy space jumper and short stature only seem to reinforce that this is Zutmore, who happens to be female by the way. But because the Kenner figure comes without gloves, is wearing a maroon colored outfit (in addition to coming with screen-inaccurate details like no boots) and has a head sculpt that favors Takeel a whole lot more than it does Zutmore, many are inclined to believe that although Kenner used the wrong reference image, this character is intended to be Takeel from Chalmun’s Cantina. Throughout the years we have received almost every last nuance of these Snivvian characters, and in some fashion or another have them all now. But what modern Hasbro figure best represents the 1979 Snaggletooth figure? Well, I will go my grave believing that Snaggletooth is an amalgamation of multiple Snivvian characters. So, the jury will probably remain forever out on what figure best represents the vintage Kenner Snaggletooth. Growing up with this figure, he was another one of my favorites. I remember having fun adventures with him in the clothing racks at Steinbach’s, a tiny mall in Manalapan, NJ which was not far from where I lived at the time. I didn’t know about the taller Blue Snaggletooth until my brother pulled it out of his pocket on the bus ride home from school. His best friend gave it to him, and the figure eventually became part of my collection of Star Wars men. As time moved forward, he didn’t remain one of my favorites, but I still appreciate those recollected memories nonetheless.

Hasbro's Most Definitive Modern Counterpart: 2001's POTJ Zutton (Snaggletooth) figure which is actually Zutmore from THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL. However, because this character didn't appear in A NEW HOPE, most consider 2021's THE VINTAGE COLLECTION Zutton (VC189) figure as the modern counterpart instead.
