Sometimes it’s just too hard to fault Hasbro for taking a risk on something, even if it doesn’t end up meeting your complete expectations. That’s about where our assessment lands when it comes to the Jango Fett (Kamino Confrontation) Ultra figure set from the Star Wars “Saga” line. If you recall, this set began life as a Deluxe set in the Star Wars [Saga - Phase II] line before it was abruptly canceled. Now this toy, based on a particular scene from Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones, is part of the new "Ultra" branding, which simply means "Deluxe 2.0." Hasbro decided a scene dealing with the confrontation between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jango Fett on Kamino would make for interesting figures, and they were right. The Ultra line not only implements parts of the environments from these scenes, but they also interact with each other to complete a more cohesive diorama. Add in some discrete, yet neat play features, and the 2003 Deluxe sets open up a whole new world of playthings for collectors of all ages, especially the kids. Jango Fett (Kamino Confrontation) may be the more interesting of the two because we get a “new” Jango Fett figure based on a great older sculpt with new parts.
The pack-in Jango Fett figure in this set is a retool and repaint of 2002’s Star Wars “Saga” Jango Fett (Kamino Escape) (’02 #13) figure. This time the figure has been given an all-new head sculpt (while you can see Jango’s chin under the helmet, the helmet isn’t removable now) and two all-new lower arms. The new forearms have magnets added to them for the action feature. If you place Jango Fett (Kamino Showdown) on the “springboard” and activate it, he will go flying into the air and “land” on the magnetic Kamino column that comes packaged with him. It’s a very cool action feature, and while it’s difficult at first to master, it does indeed work. (The packaging even has a disclaimer that it will take time to master this feature.) Jango Fett looks a little less colorful for the Ultra line version, but all of the main colors are in place. We also noticed paint operation differences between the 2003 version when compared to this 2004 version. The gauntlet with the cable is no longer here, so you get a little more of a movie-accurate version of Jango Fett here with this release. Still included, however, is the removable jet backpack as well as the projectile. And of course, he still comes with two Westar-34 blaster pistols that fit into his functioning holsters without issue.
For $9.99, you do indeed get a good amount of material here. The Kamino column is quite huge, as well as the display base on which it sets. When half of the MSRP is just for the action figure alone, it puts into perspective how much Hasbro could be potentially losing by having so many other parts included in the same packaging. All in all, Jango Fett (Kamino Showdown) is a welcomed release in the Star Wars “Saga” line. It looks great, has pretty cool movie specific action features, and it interacts beautifully with the Obi-Wan Kenobi (Kamino Confrontation) Ultra set. For collectors who need to have one of every figure, well, you have a new Jango Fett action figure to track down in this set. Between the new head sculpt and new forearms, this now counts as a “new” figure in the sense that this figure has never been available in the Hasbro toy line until now. Jango Fett (Kamino Confrontation) will be a fun purchase for your collection. Just be sure to get Obi-Wan Kenobi (Kamino Confrontation) to accompany it. Hasbro didn't include the best action figures in these sets, but the environments they create bring something special to your collection. We think you should make your collection special.
Status: Jango Fett (Kamino Confrontation) is a slight repaint of 2003's SW [S - P2] Jango Fett (Kamino Showdown) Deluxe set. This figure is based on 2002's SW [S - P1] Jango Fett (Kamino Escape) ('02 #13) figure but comes with an all-new head sculpt and two new forearms.
