May the Force be with you.... and your Droids!
Ever since Disney “took over” the Droid Factory concept from Hasbro’s capable hands, they’ve been banging out exclusive figures left and right. Since 2015, fans of these figures can expect minimally one new exclusive figure a year, although many years there have been multiple droids released. Now with 2017’s D23 event, Disney Parks has released R5-D23, a follow-up to 2016’s R4-D23 figure. A total Disney concept, R5-D23 utilizes the standard R5-series astromech droid sculpt that we have seen utilized countless times thus far. Although unique in its own way, R5-D23 does appear to mimic the previous R4-D23 in a couple of ways, most notably the silver based body. But R5-D23 is also a different type of astromech droid too. The differently shaped domes are what typically set these droids apart from each other, other than the obvious deco differences.
R5-D23 is primarily silver. The body, dome, legs and third leg all have silver plastic as its base. When you look at this figure you see sterling silver. This little droid is actually beautiful from that perspective. The mostly silver deco is accented with black, blue and white details. They have been carefully added in ways that make sense, but haven’t necessarily been tried before now. For example, the front panel has been filled with blue scalene triangle. This paint operation is repeated on the droid’s reverse side too. We have never seen deco like this applied to these droids and it works better than we ever imagined it would. The dome deco is impressive two. It has a “two-faced” approach. The left side is accented in black while the right side is accented in blue. Even the top of the dome has half black triangles and half blue triangles. We love how this turned out. We know you will love it too.
There are so many other details to direct your attention towards but it’s better to see in person. You’ll appreciate them so much more. This is true for the deco on the droid’s legs. R5-D23 has a complex color pattern on both of its legs and Disney did a fantastic job. The paint operations look precarious, but there is no error in how they were applied. There is no messiness or overspray at all. They truly did an incredible job. Like all Droid Factory astromech droid figures, R5-D23 breaks down into six different parts. These include dome, body, two identical legs, third legs and in this case, a sorcerer’s hat. The hats are totally a gimmicky feature, but they do add charm to these figures. R5-D23 retails for $12.99 and should be available at Disney Parks and on the Disney Parks application shortly after D23. These figures are very popular among collectors. It’s expected this one will be very popular too. It looks great!
