“Echo station Five-Seven. We're on our way!”

Sideshow is proud to present the Luke Skywalker Rogue Group Snowspeeder Pilot Sixth Scale Figure from Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.

An intergalactic battle is raging, and the Imperial troops have pursued the Rebel forces across the far reaches of the galaxy to the remote ice world of Hoth. Featuring a newly crafted portrait of Mark Hamill as the Rebel hero, Luke Skywalker is geared up and ready for action in his flight suit, cold-weather jacket, and helmet with comlink. Ready to lead Rogue Squadron in an assault on the Imperial forces making their way towards Echo Base, he is fully equipped with lit and unlit lightsabers, his trusty blaster, signal flares, and a plan to take down the mighty Imperial AT-AT walkers. He is the Rebels' greatest hope for victory – may the Force be with him!

Huh. The Luke Skywalker (Rogue Group Snowspeeder Pilot) 1:6 Scale Figure is a little bit of an enigma. Maybe it’s not appropriate to fractionize a word like enigma, but this figure probably has about as much going for it as it does against it. It’s not that Sideshow Collectibles hasn’t tried here. They clearly tried hard and then some. But the final figure may leave collectors wanting more and wishing for Sideshow Collectibles to fix this or that. We’ll do our best to itemize what we think looks wrong and of course rave about what they have done right. Sideshow Collectibles has come remarkably far with human likenesses in their 1:6 Scale Figures line. And in all honesty, the Luke Skywalker (Rogue Group Snowspeeder Pilot) 1:6 Scale Figure cannot look better from this standpoint. This looks like actor Mark Hamill very much and both portraits included here (one with the helmet and one without it) are completely stunning. The detail in Luke Skywalker’s face is simply incredible. Every bump and imperfection on his face has been captured. The skin tone looks about as perfect as you’d expect. And they seem to have mastered his eyes to look exactly like the character in the film. Sideshow Collectibles has recently developed a new buck for their 1:6 Scale Figures which has tighter joints and a logical frame to allow for clothing to hang right on it. So then, what could possibly be wrong with the Luke Skywalker (Rogue Group Snowspeeder Pilot) 1:6 Scale Figure? It sounds pretty much perfect so far, doesn’t it?

We have to give credit where credit is due. We have no doubt in our minds that Sideshow Collectibles tried their absolute best to get this figure right. The devil is in the details. They really didn’t hold back at all with including the finest of details to accurately replicate this character from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. But it needed some further tweaking before it got released. Firstly, Luke appears too chubby in his flight suit. We won’t go so fa to say he looks like little Randy after being dressed by Mom in the classic A Christmas Story film, but he looks too padded and much larger and rotund than he did in the film. It’s especially noticeable in the center of his torso. The cold weather jacker should have been thinned out a bit more or something to make him appear not as full and perhaps a bit thinner. It’s also been clear for years that the pants are a deeper and darker color orange than the jacket is. While it’s possible that Sideshow Collectibles did indeed try to make two different shades of orange here for the tops and bottoms, we are left feeling that there is very little difference between them (which is a shame). They did however add some very minimal scuff and dirt which gives the outfit a very “lived-in” appearance which works very well. We just wish that there was a starker difference between the two different pieces because we feel it’s a significant detail in the film. Aside from that the figure looks rather fantastic. It has leather details (the holster and belt), plastic details (chest box and hose) and vinyl details (like the vest/bib).

The Luke Skywalker (Rogue Group Snowspeeder Pilot) 1:6 Scale Figure comes with a generous amount of accessories. Each hand attachment has a different shape for each accessory included here. The nice feature here are the ungloved hands. Sideshow Collectibles has also included a “folded glove accessory” which is really just an unusable prop made to look like the gloves have been removed. But he can hold them in his ungloved hands and it looks rather remarkable. The lightsaber hilt also has a very nice feature. You can utilize it separately as a hilt and hand it from the costume. But it has a removable section right at the point of ignition. You can remove this filling piece and replace it with the fully lit blade. This allows you to have an unlit lightsaber without any sacrifices to its aesthetics. It is easily removable and replaceable. Sideshow Collectibles has even included an extra back-up plug. It’s very tiny so they’re probably surmising that it’s a piece that collectors could easily lose and be upset over if lost. Thankfully they now have a replacement if need be. Between the well-designed figure and the wealth of accessories it’s hard to give this figure a bad score. We are indeed bothered by the obvious thickness the costume creates and we are even more disappointed over Sideshow ignoring the different orange colors, but this figure looks so incredible otherwise that it’s easy to overlook these faults. It’s an expensive figure, so you’re going to want perfection with it. But we’re not sure if this figure provides exactly that.
