Name: Sergeant Jyn Erso (Jedha)
Collection: Rogue One
Number: N/A
Source: Rogue One
Availability: October 2016
License: Hasbro
A highly skilled soldier in the Rebel Alliance, Sergeant Jyn Erso is an impetuous, defiant warrior eager to bring the battle to the Empire. Jyn has little patience for debate within Alliance High Command, enough so that she takes matters into her own hands.
Meh. If you want to find a textbook definition of mediocre, you probably wouldn’t have to look much further than Rogue One’s Sergeant Jyn Erso (Jedha) basic figure. Yeah, OK, so the sculpt isn’t terrible. It certainly looks better than the Disney Princess The Black Series [Phase III] 6” version, but she has a mannequin like feel to her that ironically gives her a plasticity that takes a heck of a lot away from her very real flesh and bone character. Now, of course all action figures are little plastic replicas of the Star Wars Entertainment at hand, but some figures have a freaky realism that others do not. Sergeant Jyn Erso (Jedha) does not have this wonderful effect on us. This is just an early opinion, but the character of Jyn Erso isn’t finding complete favor with us at the moment. We hope that we see a totally different character than what was portrayed in the trailers thus far. Disney has a chance to make a substantial part of the Star Wars timeline good, and if they tuck away their agendas and focus on great character development and a storyline that makes sense, Rogue One has the potential to be one of the finest Star Wars stories to date. So let’s talk about the action figure. Frankly, we’re on the fence.
She is not wrought with any sculpting issues really. There is certainly a fine amount of detail in her sculpt that impresses us. So this should have been an action figure that would have pleased us. But her pose makes her appear as if she is a little too uptight or wound up. Her legs are too close together. Her arms are much too flush with her sides. And her legs are bowed just enough to give her a very annoying “leaning forward” effect that does nothing for her agile character. She looks clunky at best. Her expression is a tad confused as well. We’re not sure what she is thinking, or if she is thinking clearly at all. And the worst part for us is that her hairline is a disaster. You see unpainted flesh around her hair that has been intended to be hair. It looks half finished and is a real disappointment. The rest of the figure is painted rather well, but when the face is screwed up, it’s hard to find favor where the figure does look good. It’s just the way collectors think. Many of us don’t have the talents to touch up something that should have been done right at the factory. Clearly, it’s a missed opportunity and a huge disappointment.
Sergeant Jyn Erso (Jedha) is decently outfitted. She comes with a long and removable gray head covering. She also comes with blaster pistol. We failed to mention this, but Hasbro did tool a functioning holster on the figure, so there’s a place to stow the blaster when not in use. Hasbro did a nice job here with that. As with all simply articulated action figures in the Rogue One line, Sergeant Jyn Erso (Jedha) comes with a large off-screen cannon. It’s partially a gauntlet type of device, but it is also hand held as it has a long arm for which we assume is used for aiming purposes. It looks much too heavy and big for her to carry around, but remember that under Disney women Star Wars characters can do everything men can do physically, and better. So she should be able to hold this device without issue. It also comes with a projectile. Admittedly, Hasbro’s projectiles look better and better as time goes on, so kids should have some real fun with this extra contraption. Sergeant Jyn Erso (Jedha)is far from perfect. But she is the lead character in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This means she will likely be sought after and wanted by kids and collectors everywhere. She should be a success regardless.
