Exceptionally Force-sensitive, Anakin Skywalker escapes from a life of slavery to pursue his dream of becoming a Jedi Knight.
When a character doesn’t change outfits much in the film, from an action figure perspective it’s great when they do change outfits. You know what we mean? Too often, main characters don’t appear all that different through the duration of a Star Wars film. When they do change outfits, whether or not they appear in that new outfit for long is irrelevant. It just opens up the door for another action figure. When it came to the Episode I line, the staple character was Anakin Skywalker, but he dressed rather statically in the film. If he wasn’t wearing his Tatooine threads, he was wearing them with a podracer helmet, or a Naboo starfighter helmet. But when it came time for the conclusion of the film, Anakin Skywalker, now a Jedi Padawan, donned the threads of a young Jedi knight instead. So this became the second action figure based on the character in the film. Although the scene was short, it gave viewers a clear understanding that young Anakin Skywalker was going to be trained in the ways of the Force. Hasbro took the figure a little bit further that what the film portrayed as they included a molded Jedi robe to complete the look. He looks like a micro Obi-Wan Kenobi or something wearing it.
Anakin Skywalker (Naboo) has a pretty decent sculpt. It comes with the basic articulation you’d expect including a swivel head, swivel shoulders, a swivel waist and swivel hips. Even though he comes with the standard articulation of the taller figures, it isn’t really enough to pose him in action sadly. Unless you have jointed knees and elbows, there isn’t much you can do with these types of action figures. In our opinion, Anakin Skywalker (Naboo)’s head is a little too large and round. It isn’t the end of the world, but the accentuated style does of it does seem a little bit out of place. The rest of the figure looks great. The Jedi costume is perfect and the figure is painted beautifully. They boots in particular look like real leather. They have grain, sheen and crinkliness which together make for some incredible realism. Also new for this version of Anakin is the Padawan braid. In this case it looks too thick. It would have been better if Hasbro used some soft-goods material like they did for Obi-Wan Kenobi, but they didn’t and we don’t think the final results are all that wonderful. Your opinion may vary. But overall, despite the figure’s couple of issues, Anakin Skywalker (Naboo) looks pretty fantastic.
Anakin Skywalker (Naboo) comes with two accessories. The first is the aforementioned molded Jedi robes. It has been cast in a caramel-colored plastic and wraps around the Anakin Skywalker figure perfectly. Now these robes aren’t screen accurate. We never see Anakin Skywalker wear them in the film. But it was clever for Hasbro to take this figure to the next step and it makes for a truly unique version of the character in the toy line. Obviously, the robes inhibit the figure’s movement, but when just displayed in a collection or on the shelf, not too many people are going to care about how badly the robes prevent from the figure from moving. We would have loved to see a lightsaber included as well, but that wasn’t in the plans with this release. You do get a miniature CommTech reader communicator with Anakin Skywalker (Naboo). It can clip to his belt or be held in his hands. We love it. With so many characters from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace yet to be made, it is hard to get excited about a new version of Anakin Skywalker. But at least this version gives us the character in a completely different outfit. That for us is enough to warrant a purchase. And we believe most collectors will feel similarly.
