It’s hard to believe that a creature as disgusting as a Jawa can be so adorably endearing in a Star Wars toy line. But these filthy creatures garnered attention in the vintage Kenner era (you could never get enough of them) like no other background alien. But that trend really hasn’t dissipated at all. The Power Of The Force “2” line brings back the fun of the vintage era through new eyes. Some of the human (and even alien) characters are a bit beefy. But when it comes to creatures like the Jawas, well, let’s just say that we’re pleasantly surprised. There are no soft-goods included this time, but the biggest news story surrounding them is that you get two for the price of one. These stalwart aliens look pretty darn good in the POTF2 lineup and between their varying sizes, varying colors and varying weapons, you truly get a unique duo of these aliens to round out your Star Wars toy collection. Add to this a cool “action feature,” the light-up eye ports, and we have our first 3.75” Jawas with glowing eyes. What more could you possibly request for a Jawa action figure? (We know, you want soft-goods. We get it.)
The texture of the ragged clothing of the Jawas is simply astounding. We are blown away by the amount of etching and tooling that went into making their clothes look lifelike and worn. The one outfit is unique to the other, not only in size, but in gradients, drapes, and accessories. It’s as if each Jawa has its own unique personality, which judging from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, couldn’t be more true. We honestly don’t see much homage paying with the larger Jawa, but we bet that not too many of you won’t be able to see its influence in the smaller Jawa. Sure, there are enough differences as well, but that pointy hood sure is reminiscent of the soft-goods cloak of the 1978 release. Together the Jawas make up a dynamic duo of action figure bliss. These are some of the standout Star Wars action figures of the first two modern years, and we hope this momentum remains strong as they continue to add background creatures like this into the modern lineup. The Jawas set the stage for many other two-packs for the future. Besides, who is going to complain about getting two action figures for the price of one?
The larger Jawa comes with an ionization blaster and it fits really well in both hands. For the smaller Jawa, he comes with a smaller blaster pistol, that can only fit in the right hand, and can barely do that. The larger Jawa comes with five points of articulation while the smaller Jawa comes with four points. The addition of a swivel waist gives the larger Jawa its articulation edge. Both supposedly have swivel heads, but we’ve been unable to articulate them much at all due to the interruption created from the hoods. The paint operations are very nice on the figures. They each possess their own special coloring and even the bandoliers are different for each Jawa. Many have asked if these Jawas represent specific ones from the film. Your guess is as good as ours. Judging from the coloring alone we would have to say that the film wasn’t a total inspiration for these figures. There is a stylistic interpretation carved into this Jawas two-pack. These will sell very well. Jawas aren’t abhorred in the toy line like they are in the film. Now if the Sandcrawler could just get released into the modern line we’d be all set. (Editors’ Note: This vehicle wasn’t released until The Original Trilogy Collection, 2004’s OTC Sandcrawler Previews exclusive.)
