"You're all clear, kid! Now let's blow this thing and go home!"
Sideshow Collectibles is proud to present the Luke Skywalker: Red Five X-wing Pilot Sixth Scale Figure from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.
Proving himself one of the best hotshot X-wing pilots in the galaxy at the Battle of Yavin, Luke Skywalker has come a long way since bull's-eyeing womp rats on his home planet of Tatooine. Featuring a remarkable portrait of Mark Hamill as the Rebel hero, Luke is ready to go full throttle in his authentically recreated flight suit and harness, removable helmet, visor and comlink. From the Death Star to the Dagobah System, Red Five is standing by to set course and bring a new hope to the Rebel Alliance. May the Force be with him!
After persevering through an unbearably long string of clones, it seems that Sideshow Collectibles has set their sights on the beloved Original Trilogy for the time being. Seemingly following in the footsteps of Hasbro, Sideshow has arranged seen specific, or perhaps planet specific groups of 1:6 Scale Figures to delight fans of their high-end collectibles. It’s working. After a very strong Hoth collection, Sideshow Collectibles has moved onto Episode IV and is focusing on the Battle of Yavin, which has always been longtime fans’ favorite sequences in the entire A New Hope film. First up is Luke Skywalker (Red Five X-wing Pilot) which is tremendous 1:6 Scale Figure. They’ve developed an all-new, what they’re calling a Light, body buck for this release, so you can probably refer to this figure as the inaugural release. It’s a well-designed buck, although we’d mildly challenge that Luke Skywalker (Red Five X-wing Pilot) is a little too thick in the hips. But a lot of that has to do with the slight bagginess in the flight suit. It’s not terrible, just slightly noticeable. But with so many other incredible additions to this figure, we’d easily state that Sideshow Collectibles keeps getting better and better with each successive release. What we still struggle with however is the MSRP. Luke Skywalker (Red Five X-wing Pilot) retails for $239.99 and that is exceeding some of Hot Toys figures at this point. And we’re sure another whole facet of collectors buying these 1:6 Scale Figures have been priced out and alienated again. We don’t claim to know the logic of this figure’s high price, but we can assure you the quality is here to back it up.
With over 30 points of articulation, Luke Skywalker (Red Five X-wing Pilot) comes with plenty of articulation and you’ll be able to attain whichever pose you’d like with him. The head sculpt is quite complex and it’s clear that Sideshow Collectibles has been inspired by Hot Toys by the way it was approached. The head sculpt breaks down to a bad head. But then there is a toupee for a full head of hair. Then there are attachments for the sides which leaves the top of his crown bald. This is for the helmet attachments. When unassembled, the figure is a bit weird and can even be startling, but the way the pieces come together is borderline miraculous and the figure looks purely divine. The facial features are astounding. His eyes look completely real (as if there is real moisture in his eyes) and the likeness is better than good. Luke’s signature profile is totally distinguishable here from others and Sideshow’s sculptors did an amazing job to make it look as screen accurate as possible. The paint operations of Luke’s complicated helmet also shine through beautifully. Even the tiniest details are expertly painted on the figure. There is even a dirty wash to enhance the lived-in look of the Star Wars universe. We’re thoroughly impressed with how everything has turned out here. The helmet also has a chin strap and comlink which are expertly detailed here as well. The entire head sculpt and its many attachments are a delightful system of parts that look absolutely amazing when fully collaborated.
Now, we have pointed out that his flight suit appears a little too baggy in spots. We understand that it should be somewhat baggy. But it is baggy in the wrong areas. Again, it isn’t a travesty or anything, but Luke comes across as having slightly bigger hips. You can really see this effect in full body shots of the figure. It’s certainly not the end of the world. The buck may be compromising this aesthetic a little bit. But it’s absolutely something you can overlook. His outfit is ornamented with plenty of detail and tiny accessories. The rolled maps on his sleeves as well as the electronics on his costume, including the wonderfully tooled chest box. Even the ammo belt on his leg has been designed utilizing some sort of plush fabric. We wonder if that is screen accurate or just a detail Sideshow Collectibles made up themselves. Whatever it is it looks incredible. You can look at Luke Skywalker (Red Five X-wing Pilot) in two distinct ways. You can see him as the tremendous metamorphosis from Sideshow’s early days that he is (when they were using the awful Art S. Buck body type), or you can see him as a figure that ages and makes obsolete the long-suffering collection you’ve already accumulated. Either way, Sideshow Collectibles has reached a new pinnacle, and you can rest assured that all future products will be this good or better. But we don’t want them that much better that is makes this figure look tired. Keep up the great work Sideshow!
