Sideshow Collectibles has always been upfront about their 1:6 Scale Figures line. They stated that not too much was off limits and that they had things in the works that would blow the minds of collectors completely away. They dropped hints about vehicles like a landspeeder and TIE fighter in the past, but to date no vehicles have surfaced. Instead however, Sideshow Collectibles has released some impressive abodes and beasts to accompany their brilliant 1:6 Scale Figures. 2015 was clearly a focus on the Battle of Hoth for Sideshow Collectibles. And they made sure to release the classic tauntaun creature that would be interchangeable for whether you have Han Solo or Luke Skywalker riding it. Collectors can now welcome the Tauntaun (Deluxe) 1:6 Scale Figure Related Product, a collectible that brings interchangeability to a whole new level. As mentioned briefly, what’s so impressive with the Tauntaun (Deluxe) release is you can create both tauntauns as utilized by Han Solo and Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back. With the recently released Han Solo and Luke Skywalker 1:6 Scale Figures, the Tauntaun (Deluxe) 1:6 Scale Figure Related Product is a most welcome addition that will enhance the 1:6 Scale Figure line tremendously. With a bevy of accessories and an inordinate amount of detail, the Tauntaun (Deluxe) will certainly be a highlight of Sideshow Collectibles' already impressive resume.

This is how the figure seamlessly interchanges with itself to create the unique beast for Luke Skywalker, or the one Han Solo utilized in Episode V. The Tauntaun (Deluxe) 1:6 Scale Figure (Related Product) is cut at the head. Included are two unique portraits of the tauntaun beast. One portrait shows the tauntaun’s expression as calm. The other has the tauntaun’s mouth open and perhaps in a startled demeanor. But that’s not all. Not only are the heads interchangeable, but so are the horns. This means that you can have either look for the Tauntaun (Deluxe) figure whether you make it Luke Skywalker’s or Han Solo’s beast of burden. Clearly, an impressive amount of thinking and engineering went into this figure to allow so many options for the collector. Over time, collectors have the luxury to change things up and make the same piece appear differently thanks to the flexibility offered by the removable parts. We should also mention that two unique saddlebags and two unique canisters are also included to help complete the illusion that this piece transforms into two distinct tauntaun beasts. Although cast in polystone, the Tauntaun (Deluxe) 1:6 Scale Figure (Related Product) come with a soft-goods saddle and real soft-goods for the rolled up blankets. Yes, it would have been ideal for Sideshow Collectibles to make a fully articulated tauntaun beast, but this is the next best thing. Because of the mixed media here, the piece comes across as a museum-quality Premium Format Figure more than a 1:6 Scale Figure item.

Instead of just using the first materials that came to mind, Sideshow actually spent some time to find fabrics that mimic the actual real-world textures of what we all see in the films. For example, the pouches look like real canvas. The large blanket looks like some thermal type of cloth with a waffled texture. And the smaller blanket looks like a real fur or wool type of material. All of these soft-goods are then enhanced with “wear and tear” thanks to stunning final paint operations that make these fabrics and items look like they are truly part of the Star Wars universe…. and that we’re just borrowing them for a while. We’re also very impressed with the detail given to the Tauntaun (Deluxe) figure. We don’t think it could be in a more exact scale than what Sideshow Collectibles has done with it. The fur of the beast appears icy and windblown. And the coloring is spot on in our opinion as well. For stability, the Sideshow Collectibles team sculpted a beautiful section of the Hoth tundra terrain in an oblong shape which nicely anchors the Tauntaun (Deluxe) 1:6 Scale Figure (Related Product) in the center of it. With an MSRP of $349.99, this release offers a tremendous amount of value. It kills two birds with one stone so beautifully that you don’t even realize the pain of the $349.99 kill. So may venture to argue with that, but when you receive so many options with a high-end collectible like this, it makes you appreciate the work that went into making something this complex so seamless.
