To commemorate the rich history of the Star Wars film series, Kenner presents this Classic Edition 4-Pack in a strictly limited release. Four of the most popular characters have been produced from molds cast directly from the original Kenner action figures dating to the late 1970's and early 1980's. This special edition comes as a new era for Star Wars toys is proudly unveiled. Look for the all-new line of Kenner action figures and vehicles that capture all the detail, authenticity and excitement of the epic Star Wars tradition.
1995 means the return of the Star Wars action figure line, and from the start, it has been augmented with vehicles, playsets, and cool exclusives. There was one problem though. The new bulky body frames of all the new action figures make it problematic for the figures to interact with the original molds of the Kenner vehicles that have been re-released (as well as enhanced). The simple reason is that they’re too big. To help remedy this terrible situation, Kenner decided that they could kill two birds with one stone. They did this by casting four new molds of the most popular vintage Kenner action figures from the 1978 era (by taking new casts from the actual 1978 figures themselves) and released them in the wonderful Classic Edition 4-Pack. Because these figures have been cast from existing 1978 action figures, these new figures instantly become all-new sculpts because new details must be added because they haven’t been cut from the same cloth as the vintage figures have. Not coming from the same tooling creates problems, but there is no doubt how happy it makes collectors to see something from their childhoods on shelves again.
The Classic Edition 4-Pack contains all-new, yet similar, versions of the 1978 Star Wars Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Han Solo and Chewbacca action figures. At face value, if you ogled these figures one by one out of the package, you’d swear they were carbon copies of the vintage counterparts. But even after a cursory side by side comparison, you’ll see just how many differences exist between all of them. Typically the new versions are smaller, shorter and interestingly enough aren’t as neatly painted like the 1978 version. Despite this, we feel that Hasbro has executed miraculous precision in making these figures as faithful as possible to the originals. Getting Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Han Solo and Chewbacca in 1995 are exciting, but for us, it’s particularly exciting to get refreshed versions of the originals as a retailer exclusive multipack. By updating these figures, it shows us that Hasbro is passionate about how this all began. And at the same time, they are providing action figures that will finally fit inside all of the great vehicles getting re-released as well. (The fact that the new action figures don’t fit inside the original vehicles is a terrible issue in and of itself and should explain why Hasbro should have never decided to go with a beefy and bulky style for the classic Star Wars characters.)
Once word got out that Kenner/Hasbro could be releasing the Classic Edition 4-Pack, many collectors began whining and threatening to quit. They went so far to say that they were going to dump their vintage collections over this. They thought Kenner/Hasbro set a precedent by releasing four of the originally styled action figures, and that the rest of the line would also get re-released. (Obviously that was all a lot of hot air and very few vintage Kenner collections went up for sale.) Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Han Solo,, and Chewbacca, while almost identical to their 1978 counterparts, sport new 1995 date stamps. So those people in fear truly have nothing to worry about with this wonderful exclusive. Besides, the paint jobs are quite different, and it has been effortless for us to tell the modern figures apart from classic Star Wars figures. We doubt you will have any issues identifying them either, even if your life depended on it. Exclusive to Toys R Us, this great multipack retails for $19.99 and will be released in limited numbers per Kenner. But who knows what “limited” really means in the modern era of collecting. Also included are four widescreen Topps cards which have been included in many recent Star Wars Kenner releases in The Power Of The Force “2” [Red] lineup. We highly encourage you to consider this set. It’s a blast from the past.... in more ways than one!
