Mas Amedda - POTJ - Basic

Mas Amedda is the stern, Chagrian Vice Chair of the Galactic Senate and is responsible for keeping order during debates. Amedda temporarily takes over when Queen Amidala submits her vote of no confidence in Chancellor Valorum.

The Star Wars universe is about so many things, but when it comes to the to line, it’s often about the obscurity of the characters and their propensity to be released as action figures. A character like Mas Amedda is clearly seen in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, but aside from trying to restore order in the Galactic Senate, he did very little to develop the plot of the film. Of course, that makes him a prime candidate as a basic figure in the Power Of The Jedi line. Actually a leftover from the canceled Episode I line, when the Comm Tech chips had originally been planned to change to a new format, Mas Amedda gets finally released as part of the Power Of The Jedi line…. with mixed reviews from us at least. He is much too thin and lanky. Hasbro tooled a truly wonderful look for Mas Amedda, but the execution has fallen flat because he really doesn’t possess the similar stature of the character from the film. Also, the expression on the head sculpt is much too friendly. This was one cranky Chagrian filled with chagrin and he was anything but pleasant in the film. He seems much too content as an action figure if you know what we mean. Although the costume is designed well, the overall impression of the figure feels lacking at best.

Mas Amedda comes with a very meager six points of articulation, but this makes complete sense as he was planned for the previous Episode I line. He comes with a swivel head with limited movement, two swivel shoulders, a swivel waist and two swivel hips. The swivel hips seems like wasted articulation when Hasbro sculpted a plastic robe that covers his legs down to the soles of his feet. Sure, Hasbro added a split and you can attain some minimal movement, but it may have been better to forgo lower body articulation and apply the tooling dollars to making the character more screen accurate. The shell of his “coat” is removable and with a little determination you can remove it and pose him in another configuration, albeit not screen accurate. Mas Amedda, aside from the coat shell, comes with no accessories and he definitely feels like he is lacking/missing a staff or some other leadership device, or form of one at least. Likely not to be the number one figure for you to set out looking for, we imagine that Mas Amedda will have low appeal across the board for both kids and collectors of this line. Although not a bad figure, he isn’t great, and then that coupled with the fact that he a leftover from a previous era makes him quite uninteresting.

The Power Of The Jedi line still fills us with satisfaction. Hasbro has produced many wonderful first time characters from the various Star Wars films as well as the Expanded Universe, and they have utilized the Power Of The Jedi line to update characters already made for earlier lines. At the very least, critics of this basic figure line will still have to call it fruitful. Definitely heavily focused on Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Hasbro is fairly including a cast of characters across the Original Trilogy as well and some of the choices have been quite impressive. Mas Amedda will not have the same level of interest as an all-new Han Solo (Bespin Capture) figure, but the figure still have relevance regardless. We do wonder however if characters like Mas Amedda might perform better if they were part of a box set and not as a basic figure that could possibly clog up the line as it likely won’t sell as well as other characters. We’re just talking out loud here, but it seems that there were better options for this action figure than as a basic figure. We do think that Mas Amedda needs a re-sculpt from the ground up. We feel that the figure was at a disadvantage the moment it was confirmed for the Power Of The Jedi line due to its Episode I (the toy line) roots. A refreshed version is already needed.
