With all of the prominently featured droids in the STAR TOURS attraction, we find that Hasbro’s choice of bringing SK-Z38 into the exclusive STAR TOURS action figure lineup was bit of an odd choice. Disney utilized some of their older and no longer functioning animatronics props, stripped away their outer coverings to reveal the robotics inside and utilized them as new droids for the STAR TOURS attraction. The vulture-like SK-Z38 is one of these said characters and they were placed in various spots as theme park goers waited in line for the STAR TOURS attraction. Looking more like a bird than a genuine droid, their bio goes on to explain that they could actually lay eggs (although the eggs were incapable of hatching). Weird, right? Hey, at least this it outside of Star Wars.

SK-Z38 is a bizarre action figure. We imagine many people buying it are from the “one of every action figure” vein because we find it hard to believe that these are characters that you have been looking to see get made in the action figure line. Between the features that resemble a bird of prey, SK-Z38 also has a “propeller” on the top of its body, that freely spins as needed, but is a wonky addition to say the least. Admittedly, SK-Z38 has a well-designed sculpt. There is a ton of detail here including many wires, gears, and metal parts and all have been tooled nicely. If we have to point out its biggest fault, we’d have to say that the plastic Hasbro used to design the figure is much too pliable. It bends out of shape very easily. This is an action figure nightmare for collectors.

One of the SK-Z38’s nicest features is its articulated lower jaw. This hinge-jointed articulation point is constructed nicely and it adds something extra to a reasonably static action figure. (After all, the only other articulation this action figure has is the spinning propeller). SK-Z38 comes packaged in the Star Wars [Saga – Phase II] line look. It’s quite a departure from wave 1 and wave 2 getting packaged in the Power Of The Jedi line look, but Hasbro has also added that wave 3 of the STAR TOURS line (which comes in the SW [S – P2] packaging) is part of Collection 3 right on the packaging. Again, the only thing we can gather by that is it means that this is wave 3 of the STAR TOURS lineup. A nice design, but not a functional figure, SK-Z38 may or may not interest you.
