Celebrate the legendary Star Wars trilogy that changed the universe forever, with The Original Trilogy Collection. This collection brings to life the incredible story of good versus evil that captured our imagination and took us to a galaxy far, far away. The finest recreations of the iconic Star Wars heroes and villains are back with incredible detail and premium features to commemorate each epic tale in the Original Trilogy: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. And, as a tribute to the dedication of Star Wars fans everywhere, we are re-releasing elements of the original packaging that harken back to the creation of Star Wars action figures, which began over 25 years ago with the Original Trilogy. May the Force be with you!
It took years for Hasbro to either realize the outfits changed or buckle down and produce a version of Boba Fett based on the character’s costume from Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi. Some argue that 1995’s POTF2 [R/G] Boba Fett is the first take on a Return Of The Jedi version of the character. While the figure does have the red gauntlets, it’s also an amalgamation of other character appearances, most notably the prototype costume, as evidenced by the circles on the gloves. The first “pure” version of a Return Of The Jedi Boba Fett was released eight grueling years later as 2003’s SW [S - P2] Boba Fett (The Pit Of Carkoon) (’03 #08) figure. Hasbro needed to release a running change of this figure to “correct” the 2003 version because they colored the jumpsuit in blue. The corrected figure sported a green jumpsuit. But even the green version didn’t rectify things completely. We digress. It would only take another year before The Original Trilogy Collection became a thing, and Hasbro went to work on updating so many main characters desperate for updates. Thank the Maker that Boba Fett, based on Return Of The Jedi, was one of them. Coincidentally, Hasbro reissued the Star Wars “Saga” Boba Fett figure in The Original Trilogy Collection basic figure line (with a few changes here and there). They then reserved the all-new sculpt for The “Vintage” Original Trilogy Collection in premium Kenner-inspired packaging. Although past efforts were a strange concatenation of Episode V, Episode VI, and prototype iterations of Boba Fett, Hasbro ensured that the VOTC version would get things right. It did. Expect to see Boba Fett again in the future. This specific figure is too good of a sculpt not to reissue again and again.
Boba Fett brought collectors a super-articulated updated and upgraded version of the most famous bounty hunter in the galaxy. Hasbro placed it on a vintage-styled Return Of The Jedi card back. Our only complaint is that we wished Hasbro utilized the running change image of Boba Fett during the Battle of Carkoon that Kenner used in the early eighties. The original 21-Back image of Boba Fett was the prototype costume. And since this is a ROTJ version of Boba Fett, the “blue sky” image of Boba Fett would have made all of the difference in the world. We feel that most collectors like seeing card art reference images match the action figure inside the packaging. We know we do. Aside from the “thin” font of the Return Of The Jedi logo, the packaging is gorgeous. As far as the figure is concerned, there is also little to complain about here. Boba Fett is a spectacular action figure. The details etched into the sculpt are nothing but impressive, and the final paint job the action figure received has brought it to life. As we explained above, it took a long time to get the consummate Boba Fett action figure based on the character’s appearance from Episode VI, but the wait has been worth it. Likely, we won’t need another update to this action figure again. Then again, time changes everything. Boba Fett comes with an impressive twenty-two points of articulation. They include a ball-socket head accompanied by ball-jointed shoulders, ball-jointed elbows, swivel gauntlets, a swivel waist, swivel hips, ball-jointed knees, and ball-jointed ankles. The articulation provided in this action figure’s legs doesn’t allow for a full range of movement. However, you can still achieve and attain a great variety of poses from this figure’s articulation system, especially with the legs.
The “stepping forward” and “aggressive action” poses may be much harder to configure. But with patience and diligence, you should get Boba Fett into the positions you want. You can lean Boba Fett forwards and backward, and there is enough “give” in the figure’s arms to situate the blaster rifle in a believable firing motion. Aside from greater flexibility, what else would you want to see here? Boba Fett’s helmet is ever so slightly too full and perhaps a little too short. And we make that assertion gently. Some may agree, but others will disagree with that. No matter where Boba Fett falls short, we don’t feel it’s enough to detract from the overall quality the action figure brings to the line. We’re especially fond of the rangefinder. It isn’t overly thick and in the right scale with the rest of the helmet. It also articulates, which is a marvelous feature to have on any Boba Fett action figure. Boba Fett’s accessories include the blaster as mentioned earlier rifle, and also the removable jetpack. Although not removable, Hasbro added a soft-goods cape, which is a nice touch to the figure. It appears the fabric was treated in some way to keep it in a folded position. The arrangement keeps it lying flat and close to the figure’s back. It’s also thin enough to be held in place by the jet pack once you fully assemble the figure this way. When fully arranged with the accessories, Boba Fett is a fantastic action figure. Upon further (and much closer) inspection of Boba Fett, you will see how much effort went into developing the sculpt. Dents in the armor, explicit creases in the jumpsuit, and a stunning paint job pull all of these details to the surface. These traits set Boba Fett far above and beyond all previous versions.
