Anakin Skywalker's second in command during the Clone Wars, Clone Captain Rex was a freethinking and aggressive soldier's-soldier. Gruff, no-nonsense and tough as nails, Rex voiced his professional opinion to even the highest-ranking Jedi.
Do you find it odd that Gentle Giant Ltd, would relegate what may be regarded as the most popular character from The Clone Wars television show as a PGM exclusive? And on top of that created less than 2500 pieces of the character for a free gift in the Collector’s Club? We find it especially disheartening that so many Mini Bust collectors will have to forfeit the opportunity to secure Captain Rex for their respective collections with very little choice of their own. Sure, paying a yearly membership fee to guarantee yourself the opportunity to buy all of the exclusives that get released in each calendar year is a no-brainer for most people, but a character like Captain Rex would have sold like mad, especially since he tends to steal the show in every episode he appears. Captain Rex is not some random clone. He’s a member of the 501st Legion, he has more dialogue than any clone to date and he’s second in command to Anakin Skywalker. So to see him not see mainstream release as a Mini Bust is very perplexing.
The PGM exclusive Collector’s Club Free Gift Clone Captain Rex Mini Bust is definitely a fine specimen. Gentle Giant has been hit or miss with Mini Busts the last couple of years, but Clone Captain Rex is definitely one of their stars. Usually, due to the nature of a Mini Bust, Gentle Giant sculptors typically do not obstruct the view of the “faces” of the characters they bring forth into the Mini Bust line. A Mini Bust is a permanent snapshot in time (and only from the waist up mind you), so if blasters and arms are blocking the view of the face (or in this case a helmet), it can detract from the piece in how well it looks displayed on a shelf somewhere. We are somewhat bothered by how Clone Captain Rex holds his arms up with the DC-17 blaster pistols blocking the front of his helmet, but in all fairness, it doesn’t happen all that often and this variety is a nice change of pace. You can turn the Mini Bust at a certain angle to see his face so that’s a great alternative here.
The paint job on Clone Captain Rex is excellent. Our particular sample does have a few subtle blemishes, but thankfully it’s not enough to criticize it or give it negative marks. The blue color flashes seem to be off a hair as far as nailing the proper shade, but again, it is barely worth mentioning because the piece is fantastic overall. Clone Captain Rex is all one piece, something that we much rather prefer to see in this line than modular Mini Busts. This ensures that a weapon, arm or even head won’t go flying off and break should you decide to move the Mini Bust to a new location at a later long after you’ve remembered that is breaks down into multiple parts. We should warn you however that Clone Captain Rex’s antenna is very fragile and highly recommend to not even tough it. If you break it off you will be devastated. Captain Rex is limited to 1350 pieces and has a silver colored base to prove its exclusivity as a PGM release. Try to get one for your collection. It is a fine piece indeed.
