"The name's Rex. But you'll call me 'captain' or 'sir'..."
– Clone Captain Rex
Grown on Camino from the DNA of Bounty Hunter Jango Fett, Clone Trooper Captain CC-7567, nicknamed Rex, was activated during the Clone Wars, the galaxy-spanning struggle between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Rex was a freethinking, cunning, and tough warrior, yet despite his unusual individualism as a clone, Rex followed orders without question.
Serving as Jedi General Anakin Skywalker's second, Rex commands Torrent Company of the acclaimed 501st Legion of the Grand Army of the Republic. Rex and his men were assigned to patrol the most lawless and dangerous sectors of the galaxy within the feared Outer Rim.
Well folks, Sideshow has done it again. Just when we thought they couldn’t make a better 1:6 Scale Figure, they create a most spectacular display of 1:6 Scale Figure art. Captain Rex is the best 1:6 Scale Figure Sideshow has done to date in the Militaries Of Star Wars line. Let’s get something straight right off the bat. This is anything but a reinvented version of Sideshow’s previous Republic Clone Trooper (Phase I Armor). Sideshow has really started from scratch (we’re not claiming the armor wasn’t reused but they have taken a new approach) to develop an perfectly accurate representation of Captain Rex’s form and the results are extremely satisfying. If you think he is just another clone trooper, you are sorely mistaken. There are pieces included for the first time ever here. Collectors of Sideshow Collectibles’ 1:6 Scale Star Wars figures have been feeling slighted for quite some time now because figures from other 1:6 Scale Figure licenses, especially G.I. Joe, have been receiving a lot of interchangeable parts that the Star Wars line hasn’t seen until now! For example, Captain Rex comes with thirteen (13) different hand attachments and four (4) boot attachments. (Previously we would have been lucky to receive an extra set.) This has never been offered with a Star Wars figure until now. What’s more, Captain Rex has interchangeable heads including his clone likeness with blonde hair and the standard helmet (that comes with a strong/stiff and moveable rangefinder) we have all seen time and again in The Clone Wars animated series. And Sideshow impresses us greatly here too. Sideshow has also ensured that their improvements on the body have been carried forward for Captain Rex (including with a few more enhancements – more on that in a bit). He has extremely tight joints and can hold up a gun in the air without it falling or close to his body or even in an outstretched pose. He can maintain this pose thanks to perfect engineering. And if that wasn’t enough, he comes with an arsenal of weapons including the two smaller pistols that sit in his hip holsters.
Another thing that makes this 1:6 Scale Figure version of Captain Rex so incredibly special is that it makes us realize what the Hasbro line is sorely missing out on as Hasbro should really be making realistic versions of The Clone Wars characters in the basic figure line. We’re not claiming to abandon the animated line, but maybe include a few key characters in the realistic line at some point soon. This is something collectors have been wanting for years. And when you see how effortlessly Sideshow executes it, it makes us hanker for Hasbro’s take on them. Sideshow Collectibles has elected to go with a realistic approach for characters they make from The Clone Wars and for this we are especially thankful as it is the only way to enjoy them (for now). And we are especially thrilled that they didn’t go with an animated look for the 1:6 Scale Figure line because it would not have been beneficial for the line at all. (But how awesome would it be for Hasbro to make realistic versions of great characters like Captain Rex in the 3.75” line? We digress.) So until that happens (if or when), the only way to enjoy this right now is in Sideshow’s 1:6 Scale Figure line. You already know that Captain Rex is a step above all previous 1:6 Scale Figures in the Militaries Of Star Wars line. But they are some important details to note about what else makes him extraordinary. Captain Rex is the first figure to include a soft-goods kama. It is made from a synthetic (perhaps vinyl) material and it is black with blue trim. It moves flawlessly with the character as you pose him in any position and the great thing is that is doesn’t wrinkle. (This is awesome!) And we absolutely love the two new feet attachments because it makes kneeling him so much easier (and more authentic). The rest of the armor is beautifully done and Captain Rex has all the right light blue color flashes as needed. All of the included hand attachments are pretty much sensory overload (appreciated sensory overload mind you), so you’ll need lots of time to play with them all. Many of them are scene specific to various battles in The Clone Wars and there is a lot to take in here.
Perhaps the neatest accessory is his jetpack that stays on his back via magnets. The magnetism is strong and the aesthetics are flawless. Sideshow Collectibles has also tweaked the way the placement of the armor pieces work. The thigh pieces for example have been known to fall down to the knees. Sideshow has apparently remedied these armor pieces by reinforcing them with small rubber pieces to give more resistance and friction and make them stay up better. And while we can’t see this to be certain, we think a few of the armor pieces have tiny Velcro pieces. This of course works like a charm as the pieces are almost impossible to move with this enhancement. The armor is fairly clean. It has signs of battle-damage and an aged look to it. (But his uniform is not bright white. It has an almost eggshell appearance.) We couldn’t be happier with the final approved paint job this figure received. Captain Rex also comes with two BlasTech DC-17 pistols, a DC-15 blaster and DC-15A blaster rifle, something that is common to most of Sideshow’s 1:6 Scale clone trooper figures. There is literally nothing to complain about here. Captain Rex is just that good. He has it all and can be best described as fully loaded. This is where their 1:6 Scale Star Wars line needs to remain. This makes the high retail prices of these figures completely worth it. Captain Rex is an incredible addition to their 1:6 Scale Figure line and he complements the General Anakin Skywalker (Jedi Knight) figure perfectly. (We hope they continue to pepper the line with additional characters from The Clone Wars movie and television show because they really know how to do them justice. But if you just like clone troopers, Captain Rex will make a perfect addition to your collection. We are excited for the future of the 1:6 Scale Figure line at Sideshow Collectibles. They have clearly taken this line very seriously and are continually making figures which exceed our expectations time and again. If you’re into exclusive versions, you’ll get a 501st Legion: Torrent Company specific figure stand. It’s really no big deal, but that’s what you’ll get.
