Aurra Sing
Jedi Hunter
weapon: lightsaber
trained by: the dark woman
unusual accessory: skull-implanted sensor
Once a promising if headstrong Padawan, Sing now trades in dark professions: pirate, assassin, and bounty hunter. She specializes in hunting down Jedi under the mistaken belief that they abandoned and betrayed her, and she brandishes the lightsabers of her victims as prized trophies. During the Clone Wars, her quest for vengeance once took her to Bespin, where she met a young Boba Fett.
The Walmart exclusive wave of The Saga Collection gave us figures previously released but with updated paint jobs that gave them new looks. Three cantina aliens from the POTF2 days received hugely improved decos that helped them fit in surprisingly well with newer (and better articulated and sculpted) figures that ultimately made them worthwhile purchases. To top things off, fans of Tartakovsky's Clone Wars micro-series were treated to an all-purple astromech which gave the line new dimension. It also didn't hurt that R4-M6 (Mace Windu's Astromech Droid) coincided with the purple Jedi starfighter release also belonging to Mace Windu. But one figure stood out from the rest. Aurra Sing (based on her appearance on Bespin) was also an older figure that got an all-new paint job, but Hasbro gave her a few extra details which worked very nicely. But she lacks in articulation since she is a repainted version of 2001’s Power Of The Jedi Aurra Sing (Bounty Hunter) figure. But there are some new improvements which will likely make this another worthy purchase for your collection.
This particularly troubled Padawan-turned-pirate-turned-bounty hunter underwent the biggest transformation of all the figures in the Walmart repaint wave. She’s sporting an all new outfit from her encounter with a young Boba Fett on Bespin during the Clone Wars. Creating this interesting new outfit didn’t require making any changes to this detailed sculpt; just a whole lot of black paint. Every part of her outfit that was bright crimson red during her brief cameo in The Phantom Menace (and most of her Expanded Universe appearances) has been painted over in black. She also has a really, really tight looking black mask that covers everything but her creepy pale face and ears, as well as some nice new black gloves. In addition to this much darker new look, attention has been given to some really little details as well like gold buckles and chains in her belt and holsters, and the colorful beads/jewelry she has tied up in that big red ponytail of hers. One detail of the the new paint operations that we necessarily don't care for too much is the addition of some new bands around her arms. Things like that should be a part of the sculpt, not painted on, and so it may have been better to just omit them.
Aurra includes a good number of accessories that really make this figure feel like a good value. In addition to the single blaster and sniper rifle that were included with the POTJ release, the lightsaber of a Jedi victim has been added to her arsenal. She’s also got a new soft-goods scarf around her neck. It would have been awesome if the second blaster was a removable accessory, but that’s an issue with the original sculpt and they couldn’t have fixed it this time without sculpting new parts. But there is a lot to like as far as the accessory count is concerned. There’s also the standard The Saga Collection display stand (which shows the incorrect source – TPM and not a generic EU display stand) and pack-in hologram figure. One more minor gripe is that we wish Hasbro could’ve found some way to include the antenna in her noggin. It may be really small, but it seems like such an important thing for this character. Overall though, this figure should please EU fans and just overall fans of Aurra Sing, and it was a great way to get this popular character back on the pegs. It would be nice to see a resculpt one day though with some more articulation, a second blaster pistol and maybe that brain antenna. For now though, we recommend adding this version to your collection and enjoying it for what it is.
