The Clone Wars are brought to life in a unique animation style that captures the drama of this epic period. Jedi warriors lead Clone Troopers into battle against the evil Separatist forces.
After two disappointing releases, including General Grievous and an ARC Trooper, collectors had little to no hope for how Hasbro might destroy Mace Windu. We don’t think anyone expected a dryer sheet for a cape for Grievous or a design based on Dave Filoni’s The Clone Wars instead of Genndy Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars for the ARC Trooper, but that’s what we got. We’re happy to report that Mace Windu is easily the best of the three, and save for a few minor tweaks, we think it’s a fine addition to The Black Series 6-inch line and a faithful realistic interpretation of the two-dimensional animated character from the micro-series. Now, Mace Windu certainly isn’t perfect. Hasbro wrapped a clone trooper belt around the figure’s robed waist, which looks bulky and hangs oddly. But the new shoulder armor and how they tucked the soft-good robes down into it while maintaining the integrity of the figure’s silhouette is nothing short of impressive. Hasbro also tooled all-new forearms, which recreated the armor the character used in the television series. And as a finished product, we feel it’s about as close as we’re going to get to this character. We commend Hasbro for thinking this one through before finalizing it and ensuring all the essential details were captured.
We maintain that Mace Windu is a complete success on every level here. Mace Windu is a premium action figure based on the dynamic sculpting, the uncanny likeness to actor Samuel L. Jackson, and the clever design and relatively seamless articulation system. It’s fantastic to get a different take on the character while it remains consistent with the other figures Hasbro produced of the character in the line. While we would have changed a few things to prevent the bulkiness of the armor, we still feel Hasbro did a good job here. The figure comes with 30 points of articulation across 19 areas, and the joints are fluid, allowing you to achieve various poses quickly. The addition of any figure with “butterfly” shoulders is always another fabulous enhancement. This time, you’ll discover more resistance with the joints thanks to the soft-goods robes. However, the head sculpt is relatively effortless to move. We are still pleasantly surprised with how the figure can move despite having the bulky robes affixed tightly under the armor, which typically encumbers movement. You’re going to find that Mace Windu poses brilliantly despite the figure’s approach, and it’s excellent Hasbro achieves this in this scale.
The sculpt of Mace Windu is stunning. Not only does the portrait look like the actor, but the contour of the figure’s frame is also perfectly matched to the on-screen character. This particular figure has many screen-accurate details of the on-screen character and shows how in-tune Hasbro can be when they try making the Star Wars saga’s longtime established characters. And it’s remarkably refreshing to see the love applied to the Prequel Trilogy timeline because we often don’t get enough characters from it in the 6-inch scale. The paint operations that bring Mace Windu to life accurately reflect the details of the costume we see in the Clone Wars micro-series. There are some details we find a little off-putting. Take, for instance, the greenish-brown boots. They look disgusting and don’t match the brown ones from the series. Why did they do something like this? However, the off-white pants and tan inner robes beautifully capture the character’s essence. Mace Windu comes with a lightsaber which breaks down into hilt and blade. None of the other “new” parts are removable. Mace Windu has an MSRP set for $26.99 and consistently sells out at Walmart online.
