Some Star Wars fans have already tired of the long-running Droid Factory line, but for us, we can’t wait until the next two holiday droids get announced by Disney every year. Each Droid Factory figure is unique, and Disney has been quite clever in how they produce new figures that don’t feel like they wash, rinse, or repeat the previous year’s offering. Every astromech droid feels incredibly unique and special, and it always feels like they’re taking fresh new takes on this special holiday droids. For Halloween 2019, Disney produced R5-BOO19. We’re embarrassed to admit we didn’t pick up on the theme right away, but this is Disney’s take on a droid skeleton, almost like a rotund version of Barrel from The Nightmare before Christmas. An astromech can't look much like a skeleton, but Disney made it pay off greatly, and R5-BOO19 turned out stunningly well. The utility arms “convert” to ribs,” and many other panels “transform” into other bones. This is a very cleverly approached figure.

As you inspect R5-BOO19 from dome to third foot, you’ll see how Disney transformed the panels into bones, and how the overall figures come off as a stout droid skeleton. We love the fact that Disney is willing to try so many concepts in their holiday Droid Factory line. Some look like candy corn. Some utilize the colors of Halloween, and others glow in the dark. R5-BOO19 has a couple of similar characteristics. Although based on a Halloween skeleton costume, the “bones” on the droid have a glow-in-the-dark feature which works well and pays homage to the toys we grew up with while enjoying the 80s. All of the Halloween Droid Factory figures have become runaway hits, thanks to nostalgia worked into them and the quality of the figures (they’re nearly super-articulated action figures). R5-BOO19 exudes the fun spirit of Halloween while imitating a classic Halloween character. We hope they attempt more “characters” like this in the future. Imagine a witch, or a pumpkin, or a mummy. It would be cool.

R5-BOO19 has another silly name like its predecessors, but there is no way we can deny that these are enjoyable action figures. While you don’t associate sentimentality and glad tidings with Halloween, R5-BOO19 possesses a unique charm that creates just as much joy for the recipient as a more holiday-themed droid like the ones made for Christmastime. Collectors will unequivocally love R5-BOO19. It’s a simple droid, poignant, direct, and a symbol of Halloween. Mix those things with Star Wars, and you have a fun and enjoyable collectible on your hands. While its sculpt is nothing out of the ordinary because it utilizes the standard Disney R5-series Droid Factory mold, the way this figure was approached sets it apart from the others. There is no need for a “hat” here, so we understand why Disney neglected to include one here. Typically, most collectors don’t display any of their astromech droids with those “funny-looking” hats anyway. But if you enjoy them, then no offense intended. We’re aware that they’re not everyone’s bag, but Disney is pumping out more of these units than Hasbro ever has or will.
