As an Imperial assassin droid, IG-88 answers Darth Vader's call, bringing his ruthless efficiency to the hunt for Han Solo and Princess Leia.
Hasbro has hit it out of the ballpark with the IG-88 12 Inch Figure, part of the Action Collection subset of the Power Of The Jedi line look. For us, it’s a perfect 10 in this scale, and Hasbro should be proud of the final figure. After The Power Of The Force “2” and Episode I lines ran their course and transitioned into the Power Of The Jedi line at the end of 2000, collectors of the line became restless for more bounty hunters. They obliged fans in 2000 and released three key bounty hunters from The Empire Strikes Back, and all of them looks pretty fantastic. But IG-88 stands out as the best-looking of the bunch. The Power Of The Jedi line brought collectors a concentration of characters from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, but also equally represented the remaining Star Wars saga, from the Original Trilogy to the Expanded Universe. They also focused on upscaling the 12 Inch Figures line. Yes, they still utilized many parts of the older GI Joe bodies, but they also added a ton of newness to the line, as evidenced by characters like IG-88. Some of the greatest moments in 12 Inch Figure history are found within the Power Of The Jedi line. Also, Hasbro commemorated their 100th 12 Inch Figure/Action Collection release under the Power Of The Jedi line look.
IG-88 is a highlight in the Power Of The Jedi 12 Inch Figures line. Hasbro tooled an all-new body for IG-88, but it spiritually mimics the original vintage Kenner figure. The IG assassin droid, part of The Empire Strikes Back, is a faithful representation of the character we saw in theaters. And with a new feature that gives the assassin droid an extraordinary height, this may be the first and last IG-88 12 Inch Figure you’ll ever need. Because of the new tooling, Hasbro worked in distinct points of articulation, and they give IG-88 a great deal of movement. Maybe the droid doesn’t come with every last point of articulation you’d like to see, but they did a great job covering all bases here. IG-88 is a droid, a machine. And the sculpt Hasbro tooled beautifully represents this. With a ball-socket head, swivel shoulders, ball-jointed elbows, and swivel hips, IG-88 moves nicely, but don’t expect to get it into action poses. The biggest update here is the extending legs. At both knees, IG-88s legs extend to give the assassin droid significantly more height, about two inches more. It’s a nice feature, but we’re not too confident if it gives IG-88 the right proportions. IG-88 grows significantly, but is the droid THIS tall? Also, the extended knees don’t necessarily lock in place, so it’s a bit difficult to keep the droid at the extended height.
IG-88 comes with three accessories. These pieces include a freely hanging bandolier, a blaster rifle, and an Imperial E-11 blaster. Hasbro added “grip lines” on the long blaster rifle to assist IG-88 with gripping it. But, if we’re honest, the hands of the droid don’t grip the guns tightly enough, and it’s hard to hold them in place. So, from this perspective, it’s a bit disappointing. Regardless, with a little patience and balance, you can pose IG-88 with its weapons and make it look incredibly believable, and scene-specific to The Empire Strikes Back. IG-88 also has a beautiful paint job. While the bulk of its frame is silvery gray, Hasbro added a lot of orange rust and black carbon-scoring to give IG-88 as authentic a finish as possible. In short, IG-88 is probably the best-looking Action Collection released by Hasbro to date. You’re going to love how it turned out. Remarkably, Hasbro banged out three bounty hunters in one wave in the Power Of The Jedi Action Collection line. Together, they look amazing next to each other, interacting with each other and Boba Fett. And you know that with these figures’ successes that Hasbro will finish off making the rest, including Dengar and Zuckuss. In the meantime, enjoy IG-88. And be sure to savor its greatness because the figure looks THAT good in your collection.
