Rey, a scavneger from the desert planet Jakku, is drawn into a galactic conflict and learns about the Force.
Why did Hasbro utilize the 2017 SW [TLJ] Rey (Jedi Training) figure for the Rey (The Scavenger) Galaxy Of Adventures figure? We’re aware the TLJ version is a slight correction of the colors Hasbro utilized in The Force Awakens line, but this is an Episode VIII-specific outfit that will likely confuse things before collectors accept this as accurate. We honestly want to ask Hasbro if they’re done producing this action figure of Rey. They’ve released it so many times already, and it feels like each successive release looks worse than the previous version. Aesthetically, it’s not the worst figure Hasbro has produced of the character, but she is beginning to feel like that 1999 The Power Of The Force “2” [FlashBack/CommTech] Han Solo figure where the end of her in the basic figure line is nowhere in sight. No matter your take on Rey or the 5POA line, one thing is for sure. It’s well-established that Hasbro has come very far with the 5POA line. That’s not an apology for the line, but you can’t discount how well Hasbro sculpts these action figures. Besides making the sculpts more dynamic and enhancing the paint operations wherever possible (and successful), they're not as stingy with the accessories, something that is interpreted as a value for all collectors.
No matter how many times Hasbro releases Rey in the basic figure line, we believe she will continue to gather on the pegs. It happens to any Star Wars action figure that gets repacked and repacked again (except for Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and Stormtroopers). Sadly, despite having a fantastic sculpt, Rey (The Scavenger) suffers from less-than-adequate paint operations. The inconsistent quality of the figures Hasbro makes in the 5POA format is disconcerting. Let us elaborate on her paint operations a little bit more. The way they painted her expression is almost like night and day from one sample to the next. Important features like her eyes and lips are so dramatic from one sample to the next that you could mistake her for another character. It’s important to note that, generally speaking, the 5POA figures vary greatly from one another too, so that could be the stark difference we see here. Rey (The Scavenger) comes with a ball-socket head, two swivel shoulders, and two swivel hips. She hasn’t changed all that much from The Force Awakens (from what we’ve seen thus far), so it makes sense why we do not see too many changes on her new action figures to make her appear unique, new, and fresh again. But re-releasing the same figure over and over works against that “refreshed” feeling.
Rey (The Scavenger) comes with three accessories which is a generous gesture from Hasbro in the Galaxy Of Adventures line. You’re fortunate if they include two accessories with any figure in this line, so three are appreciated. The accessories are sculpted and painted well. She comes with Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber. It’s fully lit and comes with a ringlet on the hilt that cannot be secured anywhere on the figure. She also comes with a blaster that can be secured into a functioning holster on her belt. And then she comes with her signature staff that looks like it has been created from lightsaber hilts (but hasn’t). She interacts well with all of the accessories despite coming with simple articulation. But keep in mind that you’re not going to capture any action-packed positions with her. It’s isn’t possible in the 5POA range of action figures. Rey (The Scavenger), like every other figure in the Galaxy Of Adventures line, is packed in a tubular plastic encasement. The packaging is very colorful and eye-catching, and each features an animated take on the character represented inside. Also, and it’s our favorite part of the line, Hasbro added a miniature comic book that is difficult to read if you’re over 40, but is beautifully drawn and colored. It captures a portion of the story from Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, and ends with you wanting more.
