Luke Skywalker owned one of these nondescript but speedy landspeeders, racing the sand-pocked and sun-faded craft across the desert between the Lars homestead and outposts such as Tosche Station and Anchorhead.
As you know from the San Diego Comic Con exclusive release that came out July 2017, The Black Series [Phase III] 6” X-34 Landspeeder/Luke Skywalker two-pack is visually one of the most beautiful things we have ever seen Hasbro create. We just feel like it is too lightweight for the 6” scale, something that a few collectors have disagreed with in our assertion. If you’re keeping the 6” vehicles in a sealed box, then you have nothing to worry about here. It is the loose collectors that may find some disappointment in the final product. While not nearly as stunning as the San Diego Comic Con exclusive packaging, Luke Skywalker's X-34 Landspeeder/Luke Skywalker set does have some nice graphics to it that fit the current The Black Series [Phase III] 6” motif. Again, regular packaging always pales in comparison to exclusive packaging. But in order to appreciate the quality brought forth with the regular release, you’re going to have to pop this one open. When fully assembled, Luke Skywalker's X-34 Landspeeder/Luke Skywalker is STUNNING in appearance. It’s one of the nicest things, visually, Hasbro has put together and released in quite some time. Our concern is if collectors will see a need to get the basic/mainstream release when you get so many more bells and whistles with the SDCC exclusive version. It’s probably true that most collectors will go for the version that has additional features and premium soft-goods. We’ll just have to watch its performance at retail carefully.
Luke Skywalker's X-34 Landspeeder isn’t nearly heavy enough for a 6” vehicle in our opinion. The shell of the vehicle feels too thin and the density of the plastic used just don’t feel as premium as they should. Still, the way Hasbro decorated this vehicle with paint is beyond impressive. After spending some time cutting the bands to free Luke Skywalker's X-34 Landspeeder/Luke Skywalker products inside, you’ll see just how much effort went into making these products. They’re not perfect as each has its own issues, but you do get something of size here. The Black Series [Phase III] Luke Skywalker's X-34 Landspeeder seems that it should weight about double than what it does. Again, this is just simply our opinion. It feels hollow and empty and from this perspective, it’s a very disappointing release. We are unable to process why Hasbro has yet to realize the importance of giving collectors some durability and weight with this larger vehicles. Just let us believe we are getting something of substance for these expensive prices. The included Luke Skywalker figure can fit inside the seating area, and one other character will fit in as a copilot too. But it’s a tight squeeze. Luke Skywalker's X-34 Landspeeder comes with a very generous paint job, but it’s not nearly as nice as the SDCC exclusive version. Although it also comes with an opening hood, like the exclusive version, the rotating turbine has been eliminated altogether. Those are the differences on the X-34 Landspeeder and in our opinion they’re significant.
Features on the Luke Skywalker figure are also exclusive here, so let’s get to him next. For the most part, Luke Skywalker is a repaint of the exclusive version with a new tunic that is no longer woven from premium soft-goods fabric. It more closely imitates the fabric that came with 2016’s TBS [P3] Luke Skywalker (21) figure. It’s a setback for this release, but it certainly isn’t the end of the world. Sadly, the tunic still doesn’t fit on the figure any better as it doesn’t lay close enough to the figure’s body. Aesthetically, it is a huge upgrade. Luke Skywalker comes with all of the accessories that the SDCC exclusive version had with some looking a tad differently than their counterparts in the exclusive version. In all honesty, Luke should have come with all of these parts in the basic figure line. Included with Luke Skywalker are the tunic mentioned above, removable belt, lightsaber blade, lightsaber hilt, blaster rifle (which attached beautifully to the hood of Luke Skywalker's X-34 Landspeeder), floppy hat and poncho. The poncho is also soft-goods material and hangs nicely on the figure. It’s a bit too shiny, but it’s fine for this release. All of the accessories interact wonderfully with Luke Skywalker, and the floppy hat fits like a glove. We’re very happy with how all of these pieces work with Luke. As for the figure, Luke Skywalker has been given an all-new head sculpt. We prefer it to the head sculpt given to the mainstream release, but Hasbro sadly gave him too much facial makeup, and stringent collectors are going to criticize the final paint applications.
