In 1978 Joe Johnston designed an early prototype of the infamous bounty hunter Boba Fett, for Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back. The original 'Supertrooper' design featured striking all-white armor and the first prototypes of Fett's trademark weapons.

Collectors of Sideshow Collectibles’ revered 1:6 Scale Figures line knew that it would only be a matter of time before Sideshow started banging out 1:6 Scale Figure interpretations of Boba Fett once their awesome Boba Fett: The Empire Strikes Back (Bounty Hunter) groundbreaking figure was released. Perhaps less expected was that the second release would be Boba Fett (Prototype Armor), a figure only released in a few Japanese collectibles like Kubricks for example, and only by Hasbro as an exclusive figure in 2011. This cool, yet rare interpretation of Boba Fett is long-awaited and we have to say that the final product came out better than expected. The elephant in the room here is especially hard to ignore because Sideshow Collectibles added a very important detail to their exclusive version that Hasbro ignored: the Star Wars beach towel used to create Boba Fett (Prototype Armor)’s cape. Sideshow Collectibles has included this “secondary cape” as the exclusive as well as a matching action figure display base. Together they provide collectors with a kitschy yet emotionally exhilarating collectible of the most famous bounty hunter in the Star Wars saga. There is a lot to discuss here, but one aspect of this figure that has us very impressed is that Sideshow Colectibles just didn’t take the Boba Fett: The Empire Strikes Back (Bounty Hunter) and make it white. In fact, they did quite the opposite, Many details from the new Velcro chest armor to the new belt to the new left gauntlet among many others things are all-new. Even the helmet with more accurate proportions is all-new.

Sideshow Collectibles is changing the way they produce collectibles in their 1:6 Scale Figures line. Although they still utilize the four subset categories, these collection names aren’t part of the packaging artwork anymore. Boba Fett (Prototype Armor) is part of the Scum & Villainy collection, but you will not find that name anywhere on the box. In fact, the box itself is unlike any other we have received in the line to date. It’s quite reminiscent of Japanese collectible packaging. The front of the box makes up Boba Fett’s white helmet and the back and interior have very little writing on it at all. But simplicity works very well here and we are digging the new approach. The figure itself is a collectible wonder. We love it. Boba Fett (Prototype Armor) is particularly white and has very little color and details working to accent the very white canvas of the figure. Sure, there are ample flashes of color here and there, like the black details on the helmet and chest armor. And let’s not forget about the Ralph McQuarrie inspired red and blue tiny triangles on the shoulder armor as well as the copper nose of the rocket on his left gauntlet. And while his jetpack is primarily eggshell white as well, there are multiple symbols affixed in dark grayish blue color to give it that artistic presence. Even the removable rocket is outlined in bright silver. It’s a gorgeous collectible from head to toe. Clearly there is a much to appreciate here and the more time you spend with this 1:6 Scale Figure, the more you’ll appreciate how much effort went into it.

It’s hard to tell without undressing the figure completely (something we won’t do), but it appears that Boba Fett (Prototype Armor) utilizes the Prometheus 1.1 body type as well. This means you have unprecedented articulation, more than 30 points to pose the figure in always any way possible that you desire. Of course, clothing and armor will undoubtedly limit the exact range of motion available, but there are certainly enough points of articulation here to make any collector satisfied. Based on the video of Ben Burtt showcasing the new Boba Fett character in prototype format (as seen at StarWars.com), Sideshow Collectibles did a fantastic job at recreating all of the details of this version of Boba Fett to impressive standards. We imagine that most collectors are going to be enthralled with the interchangeable “beach towel” cape and matching display base, but everything about this figure should elate fans. We adore the beach towel too, but we personally aren’t fans of the wires in the hems. We believe we are in the minority about this, but we find that once you get one part of the fabric the way you want it, another part springs out in fashion you don’t. So it’s bittersweet. We do admit that if you have the time and patience to “sculpt” the flow of the fabric that it can look amazing if done right. (We perhaps aren’t that skilled…. or patient). We can tell you however that Boba Fett (Prototype Armor) is a pure joy and we are thrilled Sideshow Collectible made it a priority for the 1:6 Scale Figures line. But we also hope they make all the versions of Boba Fett too.
