Wow. CNN has just posted an article claiming that Walmart wants to replace Toys R Us. Walmart is taking aggressive steps to fill the void left by Toys ‘R’ Us. Sensing an opportunity to appeal to shoppers and grab market share, the world’s largest retailer is expanding its toy selection in stores and online as it gears up for the first holiday season without Toys ‘R’ Us in decades. Walmart (WMT) announced on Thursday that it plans to increase its toy selection in some stores by 30% and expand its website assortment by 40%. It is bringing hundreds of exclusive brands to aisles and holding in-store toy demos. Walmart is also partnering with Ryan, a first-grade YouTube star, on “Ryan’s World” — a line of toys he recommends. Check out the full article HERE.

The official Star Wars YouTube channel released a behind the scenes look for Star Wars Resistance earlier today. In this 3-minute clip you get to meet some of the voice actors, a little is told about each character and you learn more about the general setting. For example, “Team Fireball”, as it is called, has to earn money by racing swoop/speeder bikes. The female character Tam is “tough, no nonsense and kind of has an attitude” according to her voice actress (which sounds like any other female character in movies and shows these days) and main character Kaz is actually bad at spying but has heart (the Star Wars version of Johnny English?). Check it out, the video is full of tiny tidbits and short clips from the upcoming show that will give you a better impression than the short trailer from a while ago. The clip also confirms that the show is made for kids, as one producer says that the show is intended for younger audiences, not for us grown-ups.

Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith has joined the cast of Episode IX. Nothing is known about his role yet, but Matt Smith is joining an ever expanding cast list. Dominic Monaghan (Lost, Lord of the Rings) was also announced as yet another cast member. It seems Episode IX might have a quite expansive cast list, of course both Smith and Monaghan could only be seen in smaller roles. We’ll learn more about that eventually.
What are your thoughts? Are you excited for Matt Smith and Dominic Monbaghan to join the Star Wars franchise? Smith, after his time with Doctor Who, also starred in the ill fated Terminator Genisys with Emilia Clarke, so he’s not new to Hollywood SciFi blockbusters.

Dear Hasbro, a simple question for you: when will you see to it that the myriad of exclusives released for the Black Series or TVC will see proper distribution at regular MSRP in Europe and other territories, so that etailers don’t resort to importing from Asia themselves?
Why must international collectors pay a dummy tax for these exclusives again and again? Do you think a Black Series figure is worth $47? The sad thing is, this figure will most likely still sell out. General Veers who was $59 also sold out.
Dear readers, is the figure up for pre-order in your country too? What do you have to pay for Bespin Leia? Let us know in the comments!

Well, take this as anecdotal evidence, or with a grain of salt as you wish, but Rey (Island Journey) is NEVER reaching Walmart stores until one major thing transpires…. like getting her UPC into their computers. This leaves even less hope for the TVC Stormtrooper (Mimban) figure too. A JTA reader who asked to remain anonymous performed an investigation and found out some disturbing news. I can reveal this. “I showed him the post from Steve at Hasbro saying the Rey figures shipped months ago. I then showed him screenshots I took of the figure on eBay. Most importantly, a picture of the UPC. He looked it up and said it was not even in their system. I asked him to elaborate, and he basically said without a number they recognize, it will never be moved to the stores.“ Is anyone else over this complete cluster of a mess? This is retailing basics, and Hasbro’s most significant retail partner is squandering the line right before our eyes. It’s maddening at this point. Hasbro, please read this. Is there anything you can do to help?

While the retail apocalypse is a much discussed topic, with the disappearance of TRU in the USA and UK the most memorable blow to brick and mortar toy retailers in the past few months, the toy market still saw very strong growth in the first half of 2018 in most markets, including the USA which posted really strong numbers. JTA reader Paul G. picked up this cool Vintage action figure poster at his local Five Below. There are so many things wrong with this poster that it seems so right! Most of the figures don’t have weapons, and many of those that do have the wrong ones. Not to mention the super-sized Ewoks and an Ugnaught that looks like he took growth hormones as a youngling. Vintage charm? You decide! Click below to have a look!
While out shopping this evening, I came across an incredibly cool poster that was an immediate purchase for myself at Five Below (for $5.00) as I am a self-confessed Kenner Star Wars junkie. It appears that these images (also used for the Topps Card Trader app) have numerous issues that add to its charm including inappropriate accessories (my favorite being Squidhead’a cloak on Lando), incompleteness and obvious wear. It is almost as if someone cleared out their vintage Darth Vader carrying case of figures, took some random photos on colored backgrounds and made a poster of them.

We just received our sample of The Black Series [Phase III] 6″ Red Squadron three-pack of astromech droids. Forgetting that these sculpts are terribly out of scale, the set comes off as a genuinely nice effort. We have one major problem, however, R2-X2 has a white dome, NOT a silver one. This is deco basics, and we’re very disappointed Hasbro screwed this up. They did nail the deco on R5-D8 and took into consideration all of the differences that set it apart from R5-D4 (which is something they completely botched on the 3.75″ version). The battle-damaged R2-D2 looks good, but a true retooling will be required before it’s screen-accurate to the blasts he received during the Battle of Yavin. (Remember the 2008 TAC Luke Skywalker/R2-D2 Droid Factory set? That’s what Hasbro has to do to the 6″ version of R2-D2.) Aside from the figures suffering from too small of a scale, the set is costly. These three small figures will set you back over $60 with tax. Anyway, click through to check out this fun set.

We are excited to provide you with a first look sneak peek of the upcoming Disney Store exclusive The Black Series [Phase III] 6″ Zuckuss figure. This late Fall release started off life as a Toys R Us exclusive, but Disney Store has stepped up to the plate to offer this figure (in addition to many more) to collectors of the line. It will be interesting to see if Disney Store will successfully manager Hasbro exclusives. They’re not the most prevalent retail stores around, and if there isn’t a ton online, it’s going to be problematic. Zuckuss has turned out very nicely. We wouldn’t go so far as to say he’s perfect, but he does shine where he needs to shine. The sculpt and most of Zuckuss’ coloring is brilliant. We’re not too crazy with the soft-goods cloak. It seems like it has the wrong textures and finishes. However, it’s coloring is great. One setback is that the figure’s head is one piece with the backpack. So trying to remove the cloak is going to take some skill if it’s even possible. (We don’t know as we didn’t spend much time on that.) One last thought. Zuckuss should have never been an exclusive. Anyway, the review is around the corner, but check out our full high-resolution gallery by clicking through.

We have recently received new store reports of the figures on shelves, but many more of us have never seen it once. Let us know your experiences with this figure. It’s only been a couple of months since Toys R Us bit the dust. But the ripples of it are still painful. Yes, the retail apocalypse is happening in real-time, but it doesn’t take away any of the sadness that losing our last toy store brings. I have been reading many opinions on Toys R Us’ collapse. And while many factors worked against them succeeding, a financial expert by the name of Dave Ramsey (whom I respect greatly) has a slightly different take on what happened and how, perhaps, it might have been prevented. He believes that a possible scenario existed that was overlooked during their (what he calls) “disruption” in the marketplace. He goes on to say that the “disruption” can be the biggest blessing to your business, but if you’re not prepared for the “disruption,” it can be the biggest threat to your business. He claims this is where Toys R Us failed. Be sure to listen to his final example of how being prepared for “disruption” helped another major chain immensely. After you watch and listen, let us know if you think his logic and example are relevant to Toys R Us.

I don’t know about you, but I am ecstatic that The Clone Wars is back. I wasn’t a fan back when the movie released in 2008. We posted a link to his auction over a week ago, and now there are less than half available. If you’re interested, it might be a good time to act. You can buy the patch for $8.00 shipped on eBay. The plot thickens/drama intensifies with The Black Series [Phase III] 6″ Gamorrean Guard. Now we’re getting reports of people who successfully ordered the item online when it was in stock AND WHO DID NOT choose store pick-up that are currently receiving cancellation notices from TARGET online. We have no idea how widespread this is or how many collectors it’s affected, but it’s annoying nonetheless. We wish you continued luck in your online experience ordering this underestimated exclusive.

I don’t know why, but I find this particularly humorous. I believe it has little to do with the quality of the character, but how badly she was repacked into multiple case assortments. On a related note, I cannot recall a single instance of a 3.75″ super-articulated figure going this low in price, but that doesn’t mean my memory is flawless.

We have learned that a TARGET store has placed its current DPCI number for The Black Series [Phase III] 6″ figures into a “salvaged” status. To store employees, this means that the line is discontinued and they’re not getting any more units. We, of course, know this is the furthest thing from happening. There are plenty of figures in the works. There is no cause for alarm. We saw similar activity to this last year at Walmart. It’s something retail does to purge dead stock. So, could the line be placed in a new DPCI to help with the many stock issues plaguing the line all over, or is this an isolated report? Is this a corporate initiative? Or is this simply a non-story? Stay tuned as we follow its developments.

While anecdotal, you have to wonder if this Walmart store report example exemplifies the clueless approach taken to stock the toy aisle shelves at Walmart across the nation. Of course, all of us can relate to something somewhat similar at our local chain. It also makes us adamant that Walmart should never touch another Star Wars figure again. (Aren’t the 6″ Mimban Stormtrooper and TVC Rey (Island Journey) reason enough?) JTA reader and friend Russ T. has taken a three-image pictorial for us to show readers a box he found on the top of the shelving, what was in it, and how its contents could be better utilized. (Like inches away from where the box is.) We get that a new reset is coming, but why waste the free space? Click each image for the story.

JTA reader Flying2highagain has discovered that his local super Walmart store has placed the Star Wars [Solo] Force Link 2.0 figures on clearance for $2.00 each. I wonder if they’ll ever see wave 3. This line is far from over, yet retail (in general) has already stuck a fork in it. Also, is it me, or is Qi’ra the new peg-warmers in this line?

You can stuff your sorries in a sack, TARGET! We suppose it was inevitable, but TARGET is once again sending out “sorry for the delay” emails for The Black Series [Phase III] 6″ Gamorrean Guard 6″ figure, now stating that the earliest they may be able to fill the order is mid-September. Hi JTA crew, just wanted to let you know that I found the Bespin Han at two different GameStops in NH today. I was really surprised to find this figure. Curiously, there was no sign of the Rebel Trooper at either location, and an employee couldn’t find it in the system. Now the thing I was really happy about was that they were selling Han for MSRP (usually GameStop’s price on TBS figures is $22.99). Just wanted to get the word out so that people can check their local GameStops too.

This weekend for giggles I went on my first toy run probably since the “Solo” product launch. (For the record, I found nothing of importance on Wookiee Weekend either.) What I found on shelves this weekend disappointingly didn’t surprise me. I am so used to a letdown in the toy aisles of my local TARGET and Walmart stores that if I did find something of interest I might need a defibrillator. I couldn’t even muster up enough energy to take the cell phone from my pocket to snap a picture of the shelves so I could post an article about how badly the state of Star Wars retail is in this current era of collecting. Maybe I don’t have to do that anyway. I get plenty of reports from our readers. But if you post too much truth, you get a reputation for always posting “the sky is falling” and that your site doesn’t post “positive” stories. (more….)

We are getting notified left and right by collectors eagerly anticipating the arrival of the The Black Series [Phase III] 6″ Gamorrean Guard figures, and the updates they’re getting from TARGET are some of the most bizarre things we have ever seen. Some orders are getting canceled. Some orders are entirely shipping. And some orders with multiple units are in more than one shipment. (We’ve seen as many as three separate packages for one order.) It’s almost as if TARGET is scrambling to fulfill these orders and didn’t anticipate how many of the pig guards they’d need to fill orders. But we did. We wish you all the best of luck and hope that your orders get completed with the happiest results possible. I hope that Hasbro and TARGET are ALREADY working on a reorder for this hot exclusive. It’s the only way this figure will meet demand. Let us know of your updates in our comments.

I hope this is only PART of Walmart’s new plan-o-gram for Star Wars because The Vintage Collection is nowhere to be found on it. How does Hasbro expect them to put out the Rey (Island Journey) figure if there is no spot on the shleves for her. I guess it would be too dramatic to say “Star Wars collecting is dead,” right? Holy crud. The Star Wars [Solo] TIE Fighter is amazing, stunning, and every other positive adjective possible. No more bowed wings. No more crappy bendy plastic. This all-new sculpt captures the magic of the vintage Kenner vehicle while offering new tooling details that will make your lower jaw hit the floor. All-new battle-damage features and wings with rubber running along their perimeters provide a screen-accurate representation of this brilliant Star Wars vehicle. The repainted TIE Fighter Pilot is also a nice addition here. And the Force Link 2.0 stuff is cool as well. The review is coming soon, but check out our rough Photo Gallery right now.

Well, we’re a bit speechless at the moment. But JTA reader Jared S. reached out to Hasbro Design Director Steve Evans in Instagram to ask him where in the world the Walmart exclusive Rey (Island Journey) figure is. Steve wrote back and told him the figure hit shelves a month or so ago! So far, JTA has only received reports of this figure hitting Canada (and only sporadically). Not ONE USA store report has come into us nor has the figure gone up for sale at Walmart’s online store if that means anything to you. Hasbro, please consider using Walmart as little as possible for the future please? We’re sure you got them the figures in time, but they’re probably sitting on them in their warehouses. What do you think folks? Will Rey (Island Journey) make her debut at ROSS or TJ Maxx in time for Christmas?

I thought I would answer that in the form of this post. No, the old carry-forward figures like Rey (Jakku) and Supreme Leader Snoke (and the others) DO NOT come with taped bubbles. It almost makes it worth buying these figures again, doesn’t it? I will try to add photographic evidence to this post later today for those that need visual proof.

NEW FIGURES! The Vintage Collection’s Imperial Assault Tank Driver is an essential release. But why didn’t Hasbro add three of him to the wave 2 case assortment? It makes no sense. At least there are solid case packs of him available. Check out our complete analysis of this figure in our Research Droids Reviews today! Facebook page Star Wars Black Series 6″ figures is reporting that the USA Walmart exclusive Stormtrooper (Mimban) figure is arriving at Toys R Us in Canada. Maybe it will reach USA Walmarts before Christmas. And by Christmas, I mean Christmas 2019. Once again, I have been collecting modern Star Wars for 23 years, and I have never seen distribution worse than it is right now. Poor distribution is never proven by anecdotal evidence like this of course, but as we all know this is just the tip of the iceberg. I hope there is a positive turnaround coming. If you’re interested, we reviewed this awesome figure in May and you can check it out RIGHT HERE.

It was reported by Bloomberg that Disney’s grand plans for its streaming service may not work as smoothly as intended. Disney sold the broadcast rights for the Original Trilogy and Prequel Trilogy movies to Turner Broadcasting back in 2016. And this deal also included streaming rights. It wasn’t cheap either. Turner paid 275 million for the movies in 2016, a hefty sum. Disney would like nothing better than to get the rights back from Turner, but Turner Broadcasting so far refuses to sell the rights back to Disney or is asking for too much money. The rights expire only in 2024. That could mean that for five long years the all new Disney streaming channel, which is all about Star Wars and Marvel, can’t show the first six Star Wars movies, only the Disney era movies and some fans of the George Lucas era may think twice about paying for a service that won’t be able to stream the movies they love the most. However, Disney still has some time to convince Turner to sell back the rights. Would it matter to you if the first six movies were missing from the Disney streaming service?

They may have just gone up for pre-order a couple of days ago, but thanks to our fantastic suppliers, Jedi Temple Archives has an exclusive sneak peek of wave 18 of The Vintage Collection for you. Check out the all-new sculpts of Enfys Nest, Imperial Assault Tank Driver and Han Solo (from Solo: A Star Wars Story). Enfys Nest turned out beautifully. Hasbro succeeded in mixing soft-goods with molded details, creating an action figure that is seamless as it is gorgeous. She comes with interchangeable gauntlets (both opened and closed) and her signature battle staff. Imperial Assault Tank Driver is incredible. It’s painful to think it has taken almost two full years to get a 3.75″ super-articulated version of this character after 6″ versions and 5POA versions, but it is finally here. He fits inside of the Imperial Combat Assault Tank wonderfully. Han Solo is the bummer of the wave. He visually looks no better than the Force Link 2.0 pack-in figure. Of course, the figure has a ton of articulation, but it doesn’t alleviate how terrible his facial paint operations are. Thank the Maker that “photorealistic” technology is on the way to save The Vintage Collection. At least we hope it will save the day. Anyway, click through to check out this great wave of figures. The case assortment is riddled with repacks, but we have to remember that this is a Hasbro Star Wars grouping of figures. Why wouldn’t they overload us with repetitive figures we don’t want or need? Of particular interest, Hasbro eliminated the tape, and the bubble’s heat seal looks like it’s on the card for good this time. Time will tell. (P.S. Imperial Death Trooper is forthcoming.)

I’ve come across some very random Star Wars merchandise ever since Disney revitalized the franchise. Kylo Ren kid’s punch or Star Wars crackers, for example. And earlier tonight I saw this at my local supermarket, a Rey alarm clock. They also had a Kylo Ren alarm clock from The Last Jedi. It’s for kids and is 5.99 euros or about $7. And I wonder… who makes these things? And most importantly… why? Does anyone buy this merchandise? What odd Star Wars merchandise have you seen at retail? Post pictures, if you have some. I wonder what else is out there.

JTA reader Christopher reports in that his Lancaster, OH Target completed their Star Wars Aisle reset. Thanks for the update! Let us know in the comments if you are seeing the same in your area.
I was just at my local Target in Lancaster, OH. They completed their Star Wars toy aisle reset today. They put out not only the remaining two Gamorrean guards they had in stock ( the store received in three initially and someone got one out of the back room for me last Friday ) but they also, interestingly enough, put out five of the Target Chewbacca exclusive figures which have not been on the shelf at my Target yet. And they had their own shelf label. There were a few gaps in the stock. I’m interested to see what the 49.99 Kylo Ren black series tag corresponds to, as I’m not familiar with a 49.99 Kylo Ren black series Item coming out at this time. Thanks.

We also have a first look sneak peek of the TARGET exclusive The Black Series [Phase III] Moloch figure, coming to TARGET soon. I don’t know. The figure looks fantastic, but it feels like it has “wait for clearance” brandished on his forehead too. Moloch is an expensive figure at $29.99, so we’re not sure how many people will plop down this kind of money for a 6″ figure that isn’t a Gamorrean Guard. We do however wish TARGET and Hasbro luck with this release. With minimal articulation and a great paint job, Moloch may end up not being the retailer exclusive for which we were waiting. Time will tell. But you can check out our sneak peek now!!

We have an exciting first look sneak peek at The Vintage Collection’s Stormtrooper (Mimban) (VC123) figure. We have one word for Hasbro: BRAVA! It’s beautiful. The Stormtrooper (Mimban) figure comes with an incredible 30 points of articulation. Hasbro tooled the armor in a way that optimizes the figure’s movement. Articulation enthusiasts are going to be thrilled once they realize the poses they’ll be able to achieve thanks to how Hasbro worked in this figure’s articulation. The paint operations are excellent, and he is relatively dirty but nowhere near as dirty as the troopers in the film. Once Hasbro announced this figure, collectors began clamoring for an all-new Stormtrooper sculpt utilizing most of this figure’s parts. Well, if Hasbro does use most of this figure, we have our definitive figure. The packaging is alright. The subtitle of “Mimban” in parentheses should be BENEATH the word “Stormtrooper” and not to the right of it. Come on, Hasbro. Your graphics department should have this locked down by now. The review is coming soon, but you can check most everything else right now. Enjoy!

Director J.J. Abrams posted a very first photo from the set of Episode IX earlier today on Twitter. It doesn’t reveal or show much really, but still, it’s evidence that filming has begun. Now J.J. has the momumental task ahead of him to deliver the grand finale to the Skywalker saga. What you see in the photo is the camera rig and if you squint very hard it may very well be that John Boyega and some other person (Daisy Ridley?) are in the cockpit of what could be the Millennium Falcon. It also seems Finn finally got rid rid of his leather jacket, I wonder what Poe thinks about that!

Out of nowhere, MULTIPLE TARGET stores across the country are receiving more Gamorrean Guard figures. Brickseek lies! (That’s a joke.) We have new reports from NJ, VA, NH, and NC and we imagine more will come in when the rest of the country opens up shop. Stores that showed no inventory last night had them on shelves this morning. Let the insanity begin! Thanks to all who wrote in with reports! Images below are from JTA reader Dana S. S.
